LOS ANGELES, May 4, 2006 –This Monday May 1st the port truckers, the Troqueros, demonstrated that they are indeed a union and have the power to strike. While the mass media was focused on the millions pouring into the streets of downtown Los Angeles something even more amazing was happening at the ports: Nothing. And on the North bound Harbor Freeway, normally packed with trucks also: Nothing.

The Troqueros are close to 100% first and second generation immigrants from Mexico and Central America. On Monday as part of the nationwide Day Without An Immigrant actions the Troqueros staged a one day strike.

The strike shutdown 90% of the truck traffic into and out of the port of Los Angeles. An estimated 12,000 workers took part in the strike. There were no picket lines, no blocking of the gates, just 12,000 people who did not show up for work.

A solidarity rally was held in Banning Park near the Harbor where Troqueros and their families gathered for an afternoon rally.
