When it comes to Palestinians, some people in Santa Cruz, California, can't bend over far enough to defend them. On January 5, Free Radio Santa Cruz 96.3FM broadcast an interview with Alison Weir and Adam Shapiro. Weir is the founder of If Americans Knew, an anti-Israel group, and Shapiro is an American Jew who gained notoriety last spring by sneaking into Arafat's Ramallah compound for breakfast -- just a few weeks before Shapiro married his Palestinian girlfriend.

Astonishingly, the Santa Cruz broadcast happened 7 hours after the horrific double-suicide bombing in Tel Aviv. Neither of the guests mentioned the massacre, though they spent much of their time bashing Israel. "When people say Israel has a right to exist, it means Israel has a right to discriminate," Weir declared.

The show's host, George Cadman, asked, "Well, isn't Israel justified in having all these military arms? Aren't they surrounded by Arab nations who are hostile to them?"

Weir's answer: "They would not need such a strong military if they gave human rights to everyone." She then explained that Arab countries have no desire to attack Israel, and that with one exception, Israel attacked first in the wars of 1948, 1956, 1967 and 1973.

Weir says that in Israel "There is an enormous apartheid system." Yet she doesn't explain that Israel has an 18 percent Arab population who enjoy religious freedoms and full citizenship rights -- as well as 12 members of Knesset.

Just like apartheid? Really.

Regarding the death of 13 year old Iman al-Hams.
She was hardly "walking to school" when she has shot and killed.

She left her home and veered off course a distance of 2 and a half times the distance from her home to her school.

Her destination was the Girit outpost where IDF soldiers were stationed. This area was clearly marked off-limits to civilians and considered a war zone.

The IDF did not see her as soon as they might have. IDF policy in this case, would be to fire warning shots, and if that didn't work, to fire at the intruder, trying to inflict a non-lethal injury. Soldiers are instructed to aim at an arm or leg at a distance of about 300 meters.

By the time they saw her, they had no time to fire warning shots. She was walking directly at them, as close as 30 yds. speaking angrily at them in Arabic (which they didn't understand) and she threw her backpack at them.

She was shot then. There WAS discussion of how old she was. The soldiers were sickened at the idea of shooting a child, both before and after the shooting. One of the soldiers, perhaps to emphasize the point that even a child can pose a risk (as a suicide bomber) fired at her already lifeless body.

Investigators later were unable to determine which shot killed her.

I think its clear from her behavior that she was put up to this, recruited as a child shehada. The cynical adults who undoubtedly recruited her KNEW she was unarmed, and they could make PR hay off her death. THEY are the ones responsible for her death. The IDF had little choice.

The only way it could have gone better for the IDF, is if they had seen her soon enough to wound her from a safe distance.

It is NOT policy for IDF soldiers to kill civilians or children. IDF soldiers on patrol are given a set number of bullets and these are counted when they return. They must account for every bullet they fire.

If an IDF soldier shoots indiscriminately into a window, into a crowd, into a school, or at children walking to school, then how come only 2.8% of the dead are female? Wouldn't indiscriminate fire reign down more evenly on women as well as men?

BECKY: I too have my doubts about the IDF report. Parts of it do not jive. If they had seen her at 300 meters, and she continued to approach their guardtower, why didn't they wound her per IDF policy?

The explanation, deduced from the audio tape, the investigation, and media reports, appears to be (and this is my idea alone) that she was much much closer than 300 meters when she was first noticed.

Wasn't her body found about 30 meters from the guardpost? And contrary to your claim that she was too small to pose a risk, her backpack could easily have contained explosives. Her actions (yelling angrily and throwing her backpack at them ---described by the Leftist spin-meisters as "dropping her backpack") were also suspicous. The IDF soldiers did not wound her, but killed her in a hail of bullets.

On the tape the IDF commander shouts that he doesn't care if she was three years old---meaning, that if any civilian purposely veers out of their way, approaches a closed military zone (meaning no civilians were allowed there) with a backpack, yelling angrily and approaching the very place where the soldiers were quartered, should be shot. Also on the tape is horrified discussion of her perceived age "she looks like she's 10 years old!"

The IDF commander was cleared because Iman al-Hams behavior clearly presented a possible deadly threat to which they could reasonably have used deadly force to protect themselves from.

Her backpack contained no explosives, but the IDF soldiers could not have been expected to know that at the time.

So who is at fault? I think the blame clearly lies with those unknown parties who recruited her to be a shehada.
