Challenger Marcy Winograd Blocks Incumbent Jane Harman from Winning 36th District Delegates’ Endorsement in Congressional Race

Harman’s failure to win 70% of local Democratic delegate’ votes
marks a major set-back for the six-term congresswoman.

Los Angeles, Calif.—April 1, 2006—More than a third of 98 Democratic delegates meeting in a crowded union hall cast ballots for Progressive Democrat Marcy Winograd, denying six-term incumbent Jane Harman an endorsement by the local party organization.

"This vote makes a huge statement about the depth of grassroots dissatisfaction with, and lack of support for, Jane Harman’s reluctance to challenge the Bush Administration on the Iraq war and its illegal, warrantless wiretapping. It is almost unheard of for an incumbent to fail to win the Party's endorsement, especially within the district," Winograd said.

"Jane Harman remained silent for over a year while the Bush administration briefed her on its violations of federal wiretapping law. When Bush breaks the law, we need to break the sound barrier -- not acquiesce to government abuse,” Winograd added.

The 36th congressional district covers areas of Los Angeles stretching along the coast from Venice, parts of Mar Vista, and West L.A. in the north to San Pedro in the south, where it includes the giant Port of Los Angeles. The district also includes the South Bay communities of Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Carson, and Lomita.

“As we carry this battle to the state Democratic Party conference in Sacramento later this month, we will focus on the key issues: ending the US occupation of Iraq, restoring civil liberties, and funding quality education, universal health care, and environmental protection,” Winograd said.

Winograd’s campaign against Harman began less than a month ago. More information is available at www.Winogradforcongress.com.
