Interview with Ardeth Platte, Dominican sister and peace activist, conducted by Scott Harris

Sr. Ardeth Platte is one of three Dominican nuns who took part in a Plowshares action in October, 2002, in Greeley, Colorado. The nuns entered a Minuteman missile site, hammered on the silo and made the sign of the cross on it with their own blood. In April 2003, they were found guilty of "interference, injury or obstruction of national defense materials and depredation of government property." Platte, who is 70 years old and a peace activist for many decades, received the longest sentence -- 41 months.

She was released on Dec. 22, 2005, but still faces three years of probation and must pay restitution for damage at the missile silo. Platte and her co-defendants say they are unwilling to pay the government restitution because some of the funds would be dedicated to war.

The nun served part of her sentence in Danbury Federal Prison in Connecticut and shortly after her release spoke with Between The Lines’ Melinda Tuhus about conditions for women she encountered in prison, and how women there forged a supportive community.
