Hometown Snubs Schwarzenegger Over Death Penalty

by LA TIMES Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005 at 7:15 PM

Execution Ignites New Fire in Death Penalty Debate (Dec. 14, 2005) But early today, under cover of darkness, his name was removed from the arena in a sort of uncontested divorce between Mr. Schwarzenegger and the town council, which had been horrified that Governor Schwarzenegger ignored pleas to spare the life of Stanley Tookie Williams http://nytimes.com/2005/12/27/international/europe/26cnd-austria.html?hp&ex=1135659600&en=75d86c1040b6c527&ei=5094&partner=homepage

BERLIN, Dec. 26 - For years the quaint Austrian town of Graz trumpeted its special relationship with its outsize native son, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Born in a village nearby and schooled in Graz, Mr. Schwarzenegger was an honorary citizen and holder of the town's Ring of Honor. Most conspicuously, the local sports stadium was named after him.

Governor Rejects Clemency for Inmate on Death Row (Dec. 13, 2005) Execution Ignites New Fire in Death Penalty Debate (Dec. 14, 2005) But early today, under cover of darkness, his name was removed from the arena in a sort of uncontested divorce between Mr. Schwarzenegger and the town council, which had been horrified that Governor Schwarzenegger ignored pleas to spare the life of Stanley Tookie Williams, former leader of the Crips gang, who was executed by the state of California two weeks ago for murdering four people. ...

Advocate of Truth and Justice

by PM Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005 at 7:26 PM

Arnold got what he deserved. How can a man whose father was involved with the Nazis in exterminating 6 million jews, not grant clemency to a Black man who was clearly redeemed?

Surely Arnold is a sick man, and his hometown gave him some justice.

Actually

by fresca Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005 at 9:26 PM

Actually, at the first mention by these silly Austrians, Arnold sent his ring back and told THEM to take his name off the stadium.

Beat them to the punch.

There goes their tourism.

By the way, Arnold was simply honoring the desscision of the jury and the majority of the state when he allowed tookie to finally recieve some justice.

For Real

by El Chivo Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005 at 11:06 AM

you're wrong fresca arnie didnt beat them to the punch. if arnie beat them to the punch arnie should have given the ring back before he deny the clemency to tookie, but he didnt. The city of Graz beat arnie to the punch. Graz made a decision to remove Arnie's name way before he wrote that letter. Graz made the right decision to remove his name. Graz did not say they are sorry to remove his name. DID they? I doubt that.
Austria were talking about rejecting his citzenship too. This is how outrage Austrian were.

most of the industrial counties doesnt have the Death Penality they say that the death penality is BARBARIC. and the counties does not have it they have less crimes. Why America have alot of crimes then? 'cuz this is the AMERICAN way right FRESCA
MORE CRIMES=MORE DEATH PENALITY this is your philosohy right FRESCA

And your point is?

"
most of the industrial counties doesnt have the Death Penality they say that the death penality is BARBARIC. and the counties does not have it they have less crimes."

The fact that Sharzenegger did in fact, return the ring and demand his name off the stadium when the city was merely taunting him with a threat of it is clearly him beating them to the punch.

Whatever. The important thing is that the jury's decision was honored.

Make no mistake. The Death Penalty is punishment. Not deterent.
It's important to remove monsters from society. That's what the Death Penalty does.

Reducing crime is an entirely different issue. Of course, if we actually USED the Death Penalty in a timely fashion (within a year of conviction for instance) maybe there would be some deterent.

As far as the crime rate in other countries, you may want to research some of the statistics involving Black offenders and the popualtion levels of the same here versus some of your other civilized states.
