Santa Monica, CA November 5, 2005 –“I’ve been told that I am brave to show such new and different work at such a large international exhibit, but that’s how much I believe in the work. It didn’t even occur to me,” said Barbara.
The new paintings are strongly influenced by pointillism, but the artist is more interested in the pictorial method than in Seurat’s color theories. There is also a three-dimensional element by adding what she calls DADS (Dried Acrylic Discs) to the surface of the canvas. The result adds an element of Cubism that breaks apart the figure in space, and yet these figures can be viewed as coming together. This ambiguous quality is key to the series, and adds a contemporary feel.
Barbara will show three paintings from this series at the Florence Biennale that takes place this year in the historical Fortezza da Basso from December 3-11. Over 800 painters, sculptors, performance, and graphic artists commence for this biannual pre-holiday event. The Florence Biennale provides musical and cultural events and exhibits up to 2500 works by artists from over 70 different countries. “I’m very excited about being part of this event, and look forward to meeting other artists from all over the world," said Barbara.
