Sisters Are Doing It for Themselves GoGirlsMusicFest Returns for Sixth Season
Long Beach/Los Angeles, CA - Much like the fiercely independent women of the hit 1996 motion picture The First Wives Club, GoGirlsMusic.com founder Madalyn Sklar and her members continue to prove that women can do it themselves; and invariably have fun while doing it. The sixth annual GoGirlsMusicFest is scheduled to hit thirteen cities in 22 days this fall. In October, organizers will showcase the best local and regional indie women in and around the following markets: Atlanta, GA, Austin, TX, Boulder, CO, Cincinnati, OH, Dallas, TX, Long Beach, CA, Los Angeles, CA, Milwaukee, WI, New York, NY, Phoenix, AZ, Raleigh, NC, San Diego, CA and San Francisco, CA.
The Long Beach show, organized by Kelly Zirbes of the band Kelly’s Lot, will take place Thursday, October 20th at 8pm and will include, besides the acoustic version of Kelly’s Lot, Michelle Holmes, Ché Zuro, Susan J. Paul, Ballentine, and Melissa Page. Long Beach’s Liquid Lounge is located at 3522 E. Anaheim Street, phone number 562.494.7564, and the show is 21+ with a $5 donation all going towards The Lynne Cohen Foundation for Ovarian Cancer Research. The next evening, Friday, October 21st will find GoGirls Arden Kaywin, Sean Wiggins, The Renders, Kelly’s Lot (full band) and Ballentine kicking off at 8pm at Santa Monica’s Rusty’s Surf Ranch on the pier. The show is also $5 with all door money going towards The Lynne Cohen Foundation. The Surf Ranch is located at 256 Santa Monica Pier, and their phone number is 310.393.PIER.
"Through the GoGirlsMusicFest, we have endeavored to create a safe environment for our members to share their music with new fans while disseminating information from organizations we felt related to us as women," said Sklar. As has been tradition for the past five years, each GoGirlsMusicFest event will raise funds and awareness for one common charity. This year, organizers have selected The Lynne Cohen Foundation for Ovarian Cancer Research as their designee. "We are thrilled with the addition of The Lynne Cohen Foundation for Ovarian Cancer Research. We are very excited to help raise funds and awareness for the screening and prevention of women's cancers. It's an important issue that affects all women and we offer our full support to The Lynne Cohen Foundation and the work they do," notes Sklar.
According to the American Cancer Society, ovarian cancer is considered the deadliest gynecological cancer, striking 25,000 women and killing approximately 14,000 every year in the United States. Presently, there is no early detection test. "The Lynne Cohen Foundation is honored to have GoGirlsMusic as a new supporter. This is a wonderful partnership of women helping women. Even more importantly than the funds raised, the awareness generated from GoGirlsMusic will help all women in educating them about the importance of prevention and screening for women's cancers," said Amy Cohen Epstein, President and Executive Director of The Lynne Cohen Foundation.
