Cindy Sheehan Back in California Friday to Push Area Representatives and Senators to Bring the Troops Home from Iraq and Speak at Public Event in Culver City in the Evening

Sheehan will speak with Senator Barbara Boxer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi by phone, and meet with Senator Dianne Feinstein’s staff in Bay Area, and Congressman Henry Waxman in Los Angeles

WHEN: Friday, September 9, 2005, 4:15 PM

WHERE: Outside Congressman Henry Waxman's office, 8436 West 3rd st. Suite 600, LA 90048

WHAT: Cindy Sheehan, the grieving military mother whose August vigil outside President Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas focused the nation’s attention on the human cost of the Iraq war, will be in California on Friday to press California Senators and Representatives to bring the US troops home from Iraq immediately.

Sheehan has phone meetings scheduled with Senator Barbara Boxer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and an in-person meeting with staff members of Senator Dianne Feinstein and Congressman Henry Waxman.

At 4:15 PM, Sheehan will be available for interviews and will report on the outcome of her talks with California political leaders. The media availability will take place outside Waxman's office 8436 West 3rd St. Suite 600, in Los Angeles.

“The news for the past week has centered on New Orleans – and rightly so – but we can’t forget that the war and devastation in Iraq continues even as we face this tragedy here at home. In just the last week, 12 US troops were killed in Iraq, and countless Iraqi civilians. We need to get our Representatives and Senators to take responsibility for this war, and take action to bring an end to it,” Sheehan said.

Since Sheehan’s vigil in Crawford ended on August 31, she and other military family members, Iraq war veterans, and peace activists have taken the vigil Sheehan began in Crawford to the doorsteps of members of Congress throughout the country, in an effort to hold Congress members and the President accountable for the devastation in Iraq. In a letter she wrote to Congress members in late August, she said, “President Bush sent our sons and daughters to war in Iraq. Congress gave him the authority to do so. That's why we are now turning to you, the elected officials who have the power to declare wars -- and end wars.”

So far, Sheehan has visited the offices of Congressmen Mark Kirk, Dennis Hastert, Tom Delay, and Lloyd Doggett, among others. She has had postive responses from Representatives Barbara Lee and Charles Rangel.

During the meetings, she asks Congress members the simple questions she wanted to ask President Bush: What is the "noble cause " that brave Americans like Casey Sheehan have died for? How many more lives are we as a country willing to sacrifice in Iraq? How many are you personally willing to sacrifice? What are you specifically doing to bring our sons and daughters home from this needless war?
