The crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan has reached alarming proportions-since 2003, up to 400,000 people have been killed by government-sanctioned militias and between two and two million people have been displaced and are in danger of starvation.
On Thursday, July 21, 2005, Darfur Freedom Summer Vigils will be held in different cities across the nation. As sunset rolls from East to West, we are hoping to create a candlelight wave, with caring people lighting candles in each city along the way.
These vigils will focus on how each one of us can take action and make a difference. Immediate action campaigns will be on site and informational/action kits will be available for people to take to their own community, with them becoming peaceful warriors for Darfur.
Join several community justice groups at the Federal Building as we remember past victims of genocide and commit to action to end the genocide in Darfur today!
- Date: Thursday, July 21
- Location: Federal Building, 11000 Wilshire Blvd.
- Time: 6:00 pm
Please bring your friends, family, and coworkers to this important event!
We need volunteers at the vigil. If you you have any questions or would like to volunteer, or cover this event please contact
Gabriel Stauring ASAP.

What's happening in Darfur is horrible, but don't fall for this. This "movement" is trying to play with people's best intentions to achieve its own aims - which have nothing to do with humanitarianism. What are these demonstrators calling for? US intervention?
As people in the US, our first responsabilty should be with the massacres our own government backs in Iraq, Afghanistan, Colombia and . . . . yes Palestine. This is where we get to other aims.
It is no anti-jewish conspiracy theory to understand that Israel has long had its eyes on Sudan, especially the south, for the headwaters of the Nile. Sudan is a tragedy, but a very complicated one. The armies in the south have worked with Mosad and right wing US Christian groups, this is no secret.
When there has been no national demonstration against the occupation of Iraq (feb 15 was the last national mobilization) it is an embarrasment and a shame for "progressives" to be protesting our government about Sudan and not Iraq! Do not find yourself standing on the side of the US and Israeli governments because you thought you were taking a stand for human life and dignity. They care nothing about it. . . or you, or the Sudanese for that matter. They care about oil and domination, no matter what the human cost.
