First International Womens Baseball Game in Cuba

Havana, Jul 5 (Prensa Latina) The first foreign women´s baseball team to ever come to Cuba, even before the Revolution, will arrive tomorrow from Canada for a week of play with a selection of Cuban female players.

Seen as great encouragement for this nation´s women to participate more in the country´s national pastime, which only included four teams in last year´s tournament, the Cubans and Canadians will be playing every day July 7-11.

The opener on Thursday will be staged at Changa Mederos Stadium of the City Sports Complex. They will also play at the hot spot of Cuban baseball, the Havana Latin American Stadium.

The Canadian team took a bronze medal in the latest World Championship held in Edmonton Canada, and the Cuban players, according to coach Jesus Escudero in Granma daily, are "very young… good at batting and fast around the bases."

Cubans are not often faulted for lack of versatility, and hard hitter Vania Cabrera can even bat from both sides of the plate.

Cuban women started playing organized baseball just two years ago and held their first national tourney last year. That´s why, baseball officials have welcomed the match with the visiting Canadians to help them improve their team´s skills.

Spirits are high and whatever the outcome on the scoreboards at the two Havana stadiums, both sides are sure to have a memorable victory.
