Why this article?

by Bill Maxwell Tuesday, Jun. 21, 2005 at 4:42 PM

Here we have an ultra-liberal Black Man citing the same statistics that, if they came from the pen or vocal chords of a White person, would be downplayed as 'racism.'

Black churches' bad tradeoff

By BILL MAXWELL
Published April 10, 2005

In trying to figure why so many black pastors are adopting issues and causes dear to white evangelicals, I realized that, more often than not, these black pastors hope to score points with the Bush administration and, therefore, increase their chances of winning big bucks from the president's "faith-based initiatives" program.

With their own church-sponsored social programs costing large sums, some black ministers are lining up for a federal handout. For his part, Bush, along with other Republicans, gets the conservative black Christian vote.

What is the tradeoff in this scenario? What is the cost to the black church's traditional mission and its viability in the communities it serves?

Second only to the family, the black church always has been the most significant institution in African-American life. Until recently, the concerns of the black church and those of the black community were indistinguishable. When, for example, lay residents put issues such as health care, unemployment, education, crime and health insurance at the top of their agenda, the church concurred.

Now, as many ministers pursue federal money for their faith-based programs, some congregations are morphing into hotbeds of conservatism. One pastor, Bishop Harry R. Jackson Jr., of the Hope Christian Church in College Park, Md., sashays around the nation touting a GOP-lite scheme he calls a "Black Contract With America on Moral Values."

His priorities - abortion and same-sex marriage - typify those of his peers who have aligned with Republicans.

Similar motivations may have spurred Jesse Jackson's belated intrusion on the circus surrounding Terri Schiavo. Jackson used to be the most insistent voice urging the Democratic Party to stay focused on issues of social and economic justice. But in Pinellas Park, Jackson literally put himself arm-in-arm with leaders of the Christian conservative fundraising machine.

Liberal pastors, such as William Shaw, president of the National Baptist Convention USA, argue that black neoconservative ministers have bought into a phony, white evangelical agenda that sidesteps reality and tramples compassion and common sense.

"My position on same-sex marriage is not that it is the sole determinant on moral issues," Shaw told the New York Times. "Marriage is threatened more by adultery, and we don't have a constitutional ban on that. Alcohol is a threat to the stability of the family, and we don't have a constitutional ban on that."

Shaw and other liberal clergy believe that the same old intractable problems still plague the nation's black communities. These problems, liberals say, should be addressed without the distraction of empty words and red herrings such as a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I cannot think of another problem more pressing than the black male's failure in our public schools and colleges, as shown in the findings of "Public Education and Black Male Students: A State Report Card," a 2004 report by the Schott Foundation for Public Education. The report tracks school districts' graduation rates for black males nationally.

Following is a short list of districts and their rates: Cincinnati and Cleveland, Ohio, 19 percent; Chatham County, Ga., 21 percent; Rochester, N.Y., Milwaukee, Wis., and Pinellas County, 24 percent; New York City, 26 percent; Buffalo, N.Y., 27 percent; St. Louis, 28 percent; Duval County, 29 percent; Chicago, Clayton County, Ga., 30 percent; Oakland, Calif., 31 percent; Hillsborough County, 32 percent; Indianapolis, Orange County, Fla., and Palm Beach County, 33 percent; Caddo Parish, La., and Charlotte-Mecklenburg, N.C., 34 percent.

Fewer than 1 in 5 black males graduate from high school with the so-called necessities - college prep courses and a demonstration of "basic literacy" - to be considered "college ready." Black males are expelled, suspended and failed at rates five times higher than that of other groups.

Where are the conservative pastors in this crisis - one that potentially can make the black male even more of an endangered species? Right-wing bromides and hateful rhetoric will not eradicate this crisis.

Properly educating black males should be at the top of the black church's agenda. But it is not.

If black men are not attending college in respectable numbers, where are they? Too many are behind bars. According to Human Rights Watch, nearly 5 percent of all black men, compared to 0.6 percent of white men, are locked up. In many states, especially in the South, the figures exceed the national average. In 12 states, more than 10 percent of black men ages 18 to 64 are incarcerated. The same percentage is true for those ages 20-29.

Where are black churches in this crisis? Far too many are positioning to grab faith-based money to conduct programs inside jails and prisons. Such work is the easy part. The hard work is on the outside, in the free world where ex-cons need family, community and church support and jobs to normalize their status.

In too many communities, black churches - having adopted the warped theology of white evangelicals - shun these men and berate them from the pulpit.

And, now, black America faces the AIDS/HIV epidemic, which threatens our existence as a viable group. The infection rate statistics are frightening. In 2004, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while blacks were 12 percent of the nation's population, they accounted for 54 percent of the new AIDS cases. (Black women between the ages of 25 and 44 are more likely to die of AIDS than any other illness.)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Homophobic from its inception, the black church has gone AWOL in the AIDS crisis by joining hands with white evangelicals in order to get faith-based lucre.

The major tradeoff is a cynical and self-destructive one: Black men - already scarce in the pews - are being pushed further away from the church, the one institution that could make a positive difference in their lives.

Faith-based initiatives will not save black men. They will be saved by initiatives that are based on sincerity, common sense and reality.

Naition of Islam is Lackey of Capitalists; Organize Labor

by Socialist Tuesday, Jun. 21, 2005 at 5:24 PM

All religion is superstition and only promotes backwardness. Louis Farrakhan is just another con artist, just like all other priests, preachers, rabbis, imans and the like. The only solution to our problems is to do labor organizing, that is to build a labor movement among those of us who sell our labor for less than $70,000 a year, usually much less, regardless of color, gender or sexual orientation.

No labor movement tolerates anti-Semitism, which is proudly promoted by Louis Farrakhan, as well as by those of other religions. This is the ideology of fascism.

The Nation of Islam in San Francisco is part of the Democratic Party machine's election fraud team, putting the lackeys of the Chamber of Commerce in the mayor's office illegally.

Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam are simply doing the bidding of the capitalist class, hoping to divert the black workingclass from uniting with the rest of the workingclass in a labor movement that can and must eliminate capitalism if humanity and the planet are to survive. We are faced with a choice of barbarism or socialism.

Farrakhan is another insane racist hate monger

by Fredric L. Rice Tuesday, Jun. 21, 2005 at 7:25 PM

Farrakhan is no different than the "Save Our State" white supremists -- except that Farrakhan is without a doubt _more_ insane. Profoundly insane. His flying saucer kook rants scream out for medication. His racist hatred screams out for joining the KKK.

Why he's popular

by johnk Wednesday, Jun. 22, 2005 at 12:41 AM

He reaches out to the poor African Americans. So few in power take this group seriously, but Farrakhan does. He's a very smart leader and organizer, even if he only leads a tiny fraction of the people.

His genius is that he understands that oppression will cause many who otherwise would make it in "the system" do not, and find themselves in dire straits, or unable to advance. People who might otherwise have no other outlets for their frustrations and intellect find opportunities in the NOI and other similar groups.

I don't agree with his separatist message, his conservative and nationalistic politics. or the anti-Jewish slant, but, as with all ideas that resonate with oppressed people intent on self-liberation, his should be considered by progressives. The link below is to his paper.

Hitler "reached out" to workers as a National "Socialist"

by Socialist Wednesday, Jun. 22, 2005 at 1:09 AM

Of course Louis Farrakhan "reaches out" to workers; that is his whole con game: To divert the black workingclass from the labor movement. Adolf Hitler also "reached out" to workers by immitating the Communists, one of the 3 largest parties in Germany in 1933, when Hitler was appointed Chancellor by that good liberal, Hindenberg. He claimed to be a "socialist," calling his ideology "national socialism." He used red in his logo, while the Communists of course carried the international red workers' flag. He claimed to be for small business against big business too, as does the US government front, the Nation of Islam. The truth is, the petty bourgoisie is the bastion of reaction. And there is no solution in having black capitalists exploit black workers, and exploit they must if they are to have profits for that is how profits are derived: from our labor.

The Nation of Islam is notorious for promoting superstition, anti-Semitism, homophobia and contempt for women's liberation. It is an integral part of the capitalist government's anti-workingclass election fraud apparatus, as described above. For more on the Democratic Party's election fraud, see:
http://www.brasscheck.com/stadium
and
http://www.brasscheck.com/jonestown

The Republican Party is equally guilty of election fraud; the Democratic Party is however guilty of the same in every big city in every election, using the black workingclass against its own interests to promote the most reactionary, anti-labor candidates. As you can see from the introduction to the first website, this election fraud team is guilty of murder of a black woman, Delores Evans, and 5 children, in a fire in their Housing Authority home on December 13, 1997, from which, according to a fire inspector's report to the Hearst Examiner, they could have escaped but someone stopped them. Evans was a pollworker in the 49er Stadium Swindle election of June 3, 1997 and was about to testify as to the election fraud she witnessed in Bayview Hunters Point, a predominately African-American community, in the election fraud lawsuit filed December 3, 1997 to overturn the illegal results of this illegal election.

The election fraud team in San Francisco consists of the Nation of Islam, the Chamber of Commerce, the Democratic Central Committee, the Republican Central Committee, the San Francisco Police Department, A. Phillip Randolph Institute, the Housing Authority, Walden House, TURF, Cecil Williams and his Glide Methodist Church, and Amos Brown and his 3rd Baptist Church, among others. This is the core group for election fraud in San Francisco.

As to the above election, the socialist Peace & Freedom Party and the Green Party opposed the 49er Stadium Swindle. These organizations offer hope to all of us of all colors, gender and sexual orientation. It is the socialist organizations that offer the most to the workingclass.

THERE IS NO HOPE WITH FASCIST THUGS LIKE THE NATION OF ISLAM. Stop insulting our intelligence with this drivel that these vicious thugs like Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam have anything to offer the workingclass. It is outrageous that the original article was not moved to the Hidden Posts section as it is an open promotion of fascism. IF YOU WANT TO OFFER HOPE AND CHANGE ANYTHING, YOU MUST ORGANIZE THE ENTIRE WORKINGCLASS INTO A LABOR MOVEMENT.

by johnk Wednesday, Jun. 22, 2005 at 2:03 AM

My response was mainly to the other two posts, but, since you responded at length, I'll respond.

I generally agree with you, except the part that he's like Hitler. Hitler, unlke Farrakhan, had a large following among the majority group in Germany: Germans. Farrakhan and the NOI are for minorities.

A strictly class-based approach to politics will fail, because people don't identify strictly with class. if anything, they identify with culture as much as class.

That's why racist divide-and-conquer strategies work. The class can be divided by culture when there's a threat of unity of a class. However, to think that one can simply disregard culture is ignorant of history. Working class disunity, and terrorism by union people against minorities, is part of the history of labor. That has to be stopped. You need to create ways to construct cultural unity.

Cross-cultural, intra-class experiences are important. Sharing ethnic food, picnics, sports, performance, and other cultural things can be politicized into cross-cultural, intra-class exchanges. The workplace can be, and sometimes does become, a site of cultural exchange.

The NOI is to Islam as Krishna Consciousness is to Hinduism. Both are cults with zero credibility in the religious traditions they claim to be a part of.

Fascists have picnics with fascists

by Socialist Wednesday, Jun. 22, 2005 at 3:30 PM

People are known by the company they keep. Only fascists have picnics with fascists, and apparently JohnK is a fascist, since he looks forward to having a picnic with Louis Farrakhan and his US government election-frauding fascist thugs, the Nation of Islam.

The workingclass of all colors has nothing in common with the capitalist class of all colors. We workers certainly are not interested in picnics with the capitalist class and their fascist lackeys who happen to be the same color, gender or sexual orientation as we are. And I can assure you the capitalist class of all colors, genders and sexual orientations do not socialize and do not want to socialize with any worker.

JohnK is clearly a fascist and so is the poster of the original article. It is JohnK, Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam who are terrorists, sowing disunity among the workingclass, and that is their purpose. It is the class bond that is always the strongest and the ruling class and their fascist thugs like JohnK and Louis Farrkhan know it; that is why they spend so much time terrorizing the workingclass to not unite. Only with our workingclass unity can we put an end to the rotten private profit system that is destroying humanity and planet Earth.

Logic Leapfrog

by Sheepdog Wednesday, Jun. 22, 2005 at 3:52 PM

Wow.
This is starting to sound like a yet ANOTHER troll spraying.
Come on. Casting aspersions like fascist on anyone who is not dancing to a particular ( your ) step is dogmatic. You may be correct about Rev. Farrakahn but this kind of rhetoric is counter productive .
I suggest that if his presence is so distasteful, you should organize a demonstration among fellow socialists.

To Socialist. Call me fascist if you want. I just think that you have to contend with the fact that Farrakhan is popular with the very people that Socialists support, and claim to represent. His conservative, nationalistic message resonates, because he does a lot of concrete work with the most oppressed.

To biebee: He isn't the only person addressing issues of Black oppression, but he's one with strong rhetoric.
