"The Potluck for Progressives" is a group
organized for the purpose of bringing together
likeminded people on a monthly basis to break
bread and talk about crucial issues affecting the
community and the world.

At each meeting, people interested in peace,
social justice, labor, and the environment gather
to exchange ideas, talk about successes, plan
actions, or just engage in a friendly discussion
with one another.

Please join us! Bring a dish to share! Enjoy
the bounty that others bring as well! The potluck
will start at 6:30 P.M. with a speaker, film, and
discussion to follow.

Arlene Inouye, Coordinator of the
Coalition Against Militarism in Our
Schools (CAMS) and Robert Acosta, an
Iraq War Veteran (2003) with Operation
Truth, will deliver a presentation
about the ongoing efforts to raise
awareness and mobilize the public against
the aggressive and deceptive tactics
military recruiters use in our
public school system to get working-class
youth to join the U.S. armed forces.
Arlene will talk about the work that
CAMS has been doing in the Southern
California area to counteract the
influence of military recruiters in
our public schools (especially in
working-class Mexican and African-American
communities) and promote nonmilitary
alternatives to young people. Robert
will share about what happened with
him personally when he was recruited
into the U.S. Army. shortly
after dropping out from Santa Ana
High School and why he's decided to
speak out about it now. CAMS is a part
of the Human Rights Committee of
the United Teachers of Los Angeles
(UTLA).

¨Military recruiters, ROTC and other similar agencies are direct appendages of the military machine that exists to defend the interests of the American imperialist ruling class. ROTC recruits university students to become the next generation of the elite officer corps whose job is to oversee U.S. imperialist slaughter in wars like those against Afghanistan and Iraq. Meanwhile, military recruiters use promised tuition assistance and job opportunities to lure working-class youth, including a disproportionate number of black and minority youth, into signing up to be the cannon fodder for these wars.

The SYC opposes the extension of the repressive apparatus of the capitalist state onto college campuses and high schools. We fight against the use of the universities and schools as direct agents of U.S. imperialism and have actively organized for years against ROTC, military recruiters, military research, the CIA and cop training on campus. Wars destroy value, and transfer it from one power to another. War is theft. Warriors are theives.

Creating the tools of war, and operating the bureacracy of war, is an indirect form of theivery and value destruction. It's also a callous destruction of natural materials used to construct the tools of war.

Every hour of work spent building a bomb to "protect" us from "them" is an our not spent making production more efficient.

Every hour spent training to kill is another hour lost to improving life.

Working on war can potentially produce a net gain in value. But that value is stolen from someone else.

The "protection" from others is the golden rule in operation, in reverse. Invade others as you expect to be invaded. Get one over on the other guy before he gets one over on you.
