04/09/05 - Whiskey and Apples recording artist Zane West committed suicide last night in his Santa Barbara attic-room, said the Santa Barbara police department this morning. Zane’s strange piano melodies were said to be “eerie, piercing, and organic.”

West was found in his bathtub with cuts to the wrist by his housemate, Beth Rosenberg. “He’d been depressed for a long time...He wasn’t really a guy you could get to know,” she commented this morning.

No relatives are known at this time; he had only a small circle of musician friends. A memorial will likely be held by Whiskey and Apples Records in Austin, TX.

W&A recording artist Henry “Red” Hunter commented from his Austin home, “Zane was an amazing guy, a brilliant musician, and an estranged transvestite. He felt a kind of solitude most of us are fortunate enough to never know.”

Zane was famous for playing concerts in northern California dressed as an 1850s French woman. He had just completed the final recordings of a new album (called Xx) for Whiskey and Apples at the time of his death. He had been planning a move to Tuva because he felt at peace there. He will truly be missed.
