RNs Blast Governor on Rolling Back Ratios and Deceptive TV Ads

LONG BEACH, Calif., Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- 400 RNs from 75 different hospitals across California, in an action sponsored by the California Nurses Association, picketed Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today at his Conference on Women in response to his attempt to roll back safe RN staffing ratios and the recent misleading television ads about the issue. After the protests, Governor Schwarzenegger told the audience, "Pay no attention to those voices over there....They're just angry because I kick their butts everyday."

"For the Governor to denigrate nurses -- a historically female profession -- while speaking to an audience of women is an affront to women everywhere," said Rose Ann DeMoro, Executive Director of the California Nurses Association. "We expect more from the state's top officer than just pre-pubescent comments and blatant pandering to corporate donors."

"In the past week, thousands of nurses have marched on the Capitol, and hundreds of nurses have followed the Governor to Long Beach, all in support of the safe RN staffing ratios that protect patients and their caregivers," DeMoro continued. "We will not let Arnold terminate safe staffing for RNs." Today's protest was joined by members of Service Employees International Union Locals 660 and 121 RN.

In early November, Gov. Schwarzenegger issued an executive order to roll back key provisions of the California law requiring safe RN hospital staffing. His edict was made at the specific request of the state's multi-billion dollar healthcare industry which is among the special interests that have contributed more than million to the governor in his first year. The California Healthcare Association, whose members are major donors to Schwarzenegger, thanked him for the attempted rollback by paying for the ads praising it.

The ads feature a hospital administrator posing as a bedside-nurse and arguing for the rollback of the staffing. Despite this, scores of scientific studies have documented the direct correlation between safe RN staffing and reduced patient deaths. In addition, the hospital industry is sponsoring Californians for Patient Care, a group purporting to speak for nurses but based in the offices of the corporate law firm that represented the hospital industry in a lawsuit that failed earlier this year to overturn the safe staffing law.

30 years of educational decline....

by more rational Thursday, Dec. 09, 2004 at 6:23 AM

This is the product of a solid 30 or so years of educational decline in California. Back in the 70s, we were still at the top, or near the top of the education rankings. Since then, Cali's been solidly in the middle, and sometimes down near the bottom, hovering down with the poor Southern states.

Some folks like to blame immigrants. They're pretty much off the mark, because immigrants, regardless of legal status, tend to do okay. Besides, they're a minority.

No, the problem is in the middle of the pack. Public school once used to uplift the poor into the middle class, to take skilled jobs like nursing, and to push the excellent ones to the professions. Now, if you look at these professions, it's immigrants and their kids doing them... so, if anything, immigrants are saving California from further decline.

The decline is in the middle. Education in Cali is suffering from the big hit it took after Prop 13 passed, making it harder for education-focused districts to raise property taxes on themselves.

Prop 13 was necessary at the time, but the spirit carried on, in the form of anti-tax Republicans who just get older and accumulate more wealth at the expense of the young. Yes, that's not nice to say, but it's a simple fact. Moreover, Prop 13 really benefits long-lived corporations, who hold a lot of land, and pay 1973-level taxes on it. This is billions of dollars.

It's 2004. Prop 13 is thirty years old. The decline in education roughly mirrors the Prop 13 era. Enough's enough.

Today, we're finally paying the cost of inadequate education, and it's not just in the form of the ignorance that gets assholes like Arnold Schwartzenneger elected. We're paying it in increased salaries to skilled workers that are *necessary* to make a nice lifestyle function in California. Teachers make around k after a few years, nurses around k, doctors, I don't know... 0k or so?, managers hit k to 0k.

These high salaries are great for some, but something's out of whack when the minimum wage is in the state, and there are a *lot* of jobs that basically hover between and , some of them are government jobs. That's a whopping k to k a year. And labor laws to mandate against split shifts and the like are eroded. The poor are, relatively, poorer.

That means their taxes are basically A_RTICLE. They even get the EITC. They still require services by doctors, teachers, and others who make, relatively, a lot more money. Not just twice or three times their pay, but *starting* at around four times their pay, and going five or six times.

All the money *saved* thirty years ago by cheaping out on taxes, and turning schools to shit (and helping to create a school voucher movement to turn education into a business opportunity for the already-rich) is now being lost, as we're facing shortages of health care workers, dentists, teachers, and so forth.

Even worse, the old mandate that the UC system educate the top 12% of the public school students was recently changed to just 10%. That's around 17% fewer students.

I love low property taxes as much as anyone. Prop 13 really helped out my family, who lucked out and got a house, and then was stuck in the low income - jobs for 20 years. But there's always a price to pay for being stingy on public education.
