Haitian activist Pierre Labossiere was in Haiti early this year for bicentennial celebrations marking the country's independence from France, before a U.S./French-backed coup deposed democratically elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide on Feb. 29.
LeiLani Dowell traveled to post-coup Haiti in September as part of a fact-finding delegation led by former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark. She met with dozens of political prisoners, including Haitian singer So Anne and members of Jean Bertrand Aristide's government who were arrested after the coup.

VERMONT: Talking socialism in New England
Taking the message of socialism to Vermont, Workers World Party presidential candidate John Parker and vice-presidential candidate Teresa Gutierrez met with activists in Brattleboro Sept. 25 and Barre Sept. 26.
Their visit was hosted by the Liberty Union Party, which is sponsoring the WWP candidates on the state ballot.
"We're confident that it's inherent in the working class and oppressed to fight for a socialist society. History demands that we turn capitalism around," Gutierrez declared before a crowd at the River Garden, a community center in Brattleboro, a town of 6,000 in southeastern Vermont.
The candidates spoke before a colorful banner declaring, "Bring the troops home! People's needs, yes. Capitalist greed, no. All out for the Million Worker March, Oct. 17, Washington, D.C."
Queried about WWP's position on the U.S. war in Iraq, Parker said, "Our party stands unconditionally against the war in Iraq and for the resistance movement."
After the River Garden closed, candidates and audience members moved to a local progressive coffee bar to discuss a range of topics from Palestine to Iraq to the Million Worker March. And, of course, how to fight for socialism.
In Barre, popularly known as "Granite City" for its historic industry, the candidates spoke at the Socialist Labor Hall.
MWM T-shirts and literature were sold and distributed at both events.

Following the Sept. 18 kickoff rally in New York City, Parker and Gutierrez toured New England, with meetings in Hartford, Conn., Sept. 22, Boston Sept. 23, Providence, R.I., Sept. 24, Brattleboro, Vt., Sept. 25, Barre, Vt., Sept. 26 and Chatham, N.Y., Sept. 27.
In San Francisco Dowell spoke at a Peace & Freedom Party meeting for local candidates Sept. 25 and a Radical Women meeting Sept. 28. On Oct. 1 she will speak on the struggle against the U.S. invasion and coup in Haiti.
There will be candidate appearances in the Midwest, including Cleveland Oct. 5, in conjunction with the vice-presidential debates at Case Western Reserve University.

Beginning Oct. 18, a Southern tour will take them to Richmond, Va., followed by Raleigh, N.C., Oct. 19, Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C., Oct. 20, Charlotte, N.C., Oct. 21 and Atlanta Oct. 23. For the Southwest, in Houston and in Albuquerque, N.M., dates will be announced soon.
They will speak at rallies in Chicago on Oct. 28 and Detroit on Oct. 30.
They will be in the Mid-Atlantic cities of Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia in mid-late October.
Campaign representatives will participate in third-party presidential debates on Oct. 9 at Washington University in St. Louis; Oct. 15 in Johnson City, Tenn.; and Oct. 29 at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania.
