History of Green Flag Awards

The Green Flag program provides a mechanism for school environmental

groups (comprised of students, teachers, parents and staff), to explore the

environmental impacts of their school. The program has four project areas (IPM, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Non-Toxic Products, and Indoor Air Quality), and each project area has three levels.

The emphasis of the Green Flag School Program is to engage students in the holistic process of policy creation and implementation. When students understand the Who, What, Where, When, How and Why of an environmental impact (How does it affect me? How do I affect it? Why is it important? How can we improve our behavior? What impact can we have?), then they are much more concerned with making positive change, and really develop their creativity and activism.
