At 8pm on Saturday August 21st, activists with Orange County Earth First! participated at a home demonstration at the President of Rutter Development Corporation's house in Newport Beach, California. Rutter Development Corporation has plans to cut down 49 acres of old growth oaks to build high priced homes in San Juan Capistrano.

16 activists were arrested. 9 were minors who were realeased into the custody of their parents. 3 were bailed out. 4 other are being held on $20,000 bail. These 4 adults are on hunger strike. Please call the Orange County Jail in Santa Anna to demand their immediate release and to drop all charges: 714-647-4666.

Nicholas Hensey. Booking Number 2206114. Charges: Vandalism of $50,000 or more. Conspiracy to commit a crime.

Hector Ventura. Booking Number 2206112. Charges: Vandalism of $50,000 or more.

One only wishes ALL these eco-terrorist know-nothings were starving themselves a la Karen Carpenter.

This sounds like a truly bad situation, and I fully sympathize. I would like to suggest that, in the future, when you are planning an action like this, you anticipate this kind of response in advance, and fully document your activities and those of police and other officials. That way, people in the community will be in a much better position to come to your defense, call, fax and bombard officials with talking points, secure legal assistance, etc. Use resources like indymedia in advance, so that we can follow the story from day one, even before legal repression begins.

As it is, you are asking us to intervene in an ongoing situation about which we don't have any details. I'm sure your cause is worthy and your actions admirable, and I have no doubt the cops were brutal, if someone was hospitalized as a result of their violence, nor that prosecutorial officials have overreacted with a draconian dragnet here. However, I have no talking points to use with these officials. As it is, if I call them, I will come off sounding ignorant, because I don't have concrete demands backed up by specifics. Please help US to help YOU.

Duly noted. However, there are many people who make worthy appeals for my assistance all the time. I'm sure all of us who read indymedia and other alternative media are at no shortage of particular causes that warrant our attention. However, there's not enough time and energy in any of us to go around. Thus, it is really helpful if people who are seeking our attention and help are willing to share enough information about their case to allow us to decide whether their case warrants any more of our attention than all the others out there, especially the other ones we are already devoting attention to. Most of us are probably already overcommitted as it is. These are considerations that are worth thinking about when people write appeals like this one.

It's a hell hole (been there, done it). OC Sheriff Mike Carona, eyes on the prize, trying to run for bigger things with his frickin' entourage of bodyguards - is to blame. He's part of The Machine. No integrity. Not to be trusted.
