Police Beating Caught on Tape in LA



(Los Angeles-KABC, June 23, 2004) — Police in Los Angeles chased a man suspected of driving a stolen car. The arrest, caught on tape, shows an officer hitting the man repeatedly with a flashlight after he appeared to surrender.

The chase began shortly after 5:00 a.m. Wednesday in an area patrolled by the Los Angeles Police Department's Southeast Station, said LAPD Officer Sandra Escalante of the Media Relations office. The man's name was not immediately released, and it was unclear if he was injured.

Patrolling LAPD officers saw a white Toyota Camry that was reported stolen from Compton, Escalante said, adding that the officers tried in vain to pull the vehicle over.

The pursuit reportedly ended on Caldwell Street in Compton, where the man got out and ran off.

KABC television aired footage shot from a helicopter that showed the man running down a grassy area near the Compton Creek. He stopped, got down on his hands and knees and appeared to surrender to an officer.

Several other officers then ran up and the man was forced face down onto the ground, where one of the officers struck at the man's upper body at least 10 times with a long flashlight.

Reportedly, one officer told a local news station that the man had been resisting.

The footage was eerily similar to the infamous video of the beating of Rodney King in 1991, which also happened at the end of a nighttime LAPD pursuit. King was struck dozens of times by officers using batons after he led them on a chase that began in the LAPD's Foothill Station jurisdiction. Video shot by an amateur cameraman and broadcast worldwide showed officers striking and kicking King. Officers were later acquitted by a Simi Valley jury in connection with the beating, triggering the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

The officers were subsequently convicted of federal charges.

Today's incident came only days after the LAPD entered a two-year period during which it must show substantial compliance with a raft of reforms mandated under a consent degree agreement reached by the city of Los Angeles and the U.S. Justice Department in 2001.

If it fails to demonstrate compliance, federal monitoring of the LAPD will continue beyond the two-year period.

The city agreed to the consent decree as a way of staving off a federal lawsuit after the Justice Department reported that it had identified a "pattern and practice" of civil rights violations by the LAPD.

Blacks, while only 13% of the population, commit more than 40% of all violent crimes.

But no one wants to speak up about THAT, just like all the parasites that will cry "IT BE RASSIMS" over this in hopes of a fat bribery check won't say SHIT about this fellow's auto theft (if he's innocent, why did he run from the cops)?

Video shot from news helicopters showed the suspect running for a short distance... then he slowed to a stop and gave up. The suspect raised both arms and dropped to his knees. The first arriving officer drew his weapon, but put it back in his holster and then tackled the suspect, forcing him to the ground. A second officer jumps on the suspect, who is on the ground in a prone position.

A third officer arrives and kicks the suspect in the head. This same officer then drops to the ground, takes out his flashlight and can be seen swinging down at the suspect's head 11 times. Thump thump thump... Thump thump thump... Thump thump thump... Thump thump. A job well done. Afterwards all the officers congratulate each other and shake Officer Flashlight's hand. The forces of civilization protected once more from the rabble.

The people involved are going to be relatively poor, but also many will be middle class. (The middle and upper classes engage in different crimes, but never really get caught.) These crimes are largely a voluntary behavior. Nonwhite people do have higher rates of poverty, but, not on the scale of 3:1 like the racist above said. Also, it's probably not poverty that causes the crime, but the criminal activity that causes the poverty. The main things: using drugs, drinking too much, living the wild life, not caring about others, tends to also make you not care about work.

Then, you can flip the situation around. If you're in an area with a lot of whites, think of what happens after 911 is called. If the perp is nonwhite, the cops can spot them pretty quickly through racial profiling. If the perp is white, he can blend into the crowd.

I said right in there that poverty has little to do with commiting crimes. I said that committing crimes, and engaging in criminal culture, will cause someone to become poor.

You also missed the logistical argument: it's harder to catch white criminals.

The crime rates cited by the racist are probably based on arrests or convictions, not on the actual number of crimes committed.

I didn't even get into the racism argument that cops are more likely to go after minorities because they are racist. This one, I think, would vary by city. Even before considering this likely fact, there are a lot of problems with catching white criminals.

First, think about all criminals you know. What color are they? Did they get caught? What did they have in common, and what didn't have any influence? Were they involved in drinking or using other intoxicants frequently? Do they have mental problems? Do they have any job skills? Do they have a stable family life?

This is assuming that you know any criminals or former criminals, but, most people do, even if they don't realize it. They just haven't been caught.
