This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, the Voice of Russia, Spanish National Radio, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From Netherlands- By far the biggest news story in the international press this week has been the torture of Iraqi prisoners by US troops. In the first story a military analyst discusses how this abuse could have happened, and whether it was just the work of a rogue group as claimed by the White House. There are many calls for the UN to step in and take charge of the situation in Iraq- Dennis Halleday, former UN Humanitarian Coordinator, describes the lack of credibility the UN has in the Arab world.
From Russia- A commentary on the cost of the war on Iraq, and the Red Cross report on the torture of Iraqi prisoners and civilians. The Palestinian leadership has asked the mideast mediators to interfere with Israeli aggression that has increased in the shadow of the Iraqi prisoner scandal.
From Spain- The violence and bloodshed has been at a high level in Gaza. Following new restrictions on Cuba by the US, Fidel Castro has limited the use of American dollars in his nation. As the Red Cross confirmed its report on Iraqi prisoners that was leaked in the Wall Street Journal, the Spanish Defense Minister said that no Spanish soldier had been involved in the torture, and that Spanish troops will be out of Iraq before the end of this month. Tony Blair told the Parliament that his troops had not tortured prisoners and that the photos were faked. Then a press editorial on the torture, doubting that the actions were thought up by the soldiers at the bottom of the military ladder.
From Cuba- Nelson Mandela praised South Africa’s democracy in the past 10 years, and expressed his horror at the invasion of Iraq by the US and Britain. The Arab world criticized Bush’s new sanctions on Syria, saying they were driven by America’s blind allegiance to Israel. 80 Colombian troops were captured in Venezuela with plans to assassinate Hugo Chavez, in a plot that was arranged and financed by Cuban-Americans.
