enthusiasm for military waning fast

by Librarian Wednesday, Mar. 17, 2004 at 10:13 PM

I work in a large public library in the metropolitan LA area, and I'm happy to report a really positive development. A year or two ago the library couldn't keep preparation books for the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude test on the shelves; they were constantly checked out by high school students and older people of both sexes seeking a way to avoid unemployment or flipping burgers. Today the few lost souls who actually want these things don't have a problem; the shelves are stocked because people have enough sense not to sign up to drive around in a humvee while resistance fighters fire rockets at them. I just wish we didn't stock these things at all; we don't stock books on how to commit suicide or murder and we should not stock these, either. Censorship? Call it what you want - I don't give a damn.

"we don't stock books on how to commit suicide or murder and we should not stock these, either. "

Why not?

Don't tell me you are actually so deluded that you think we shouldn't have a military.

Actually, I think that a good idea would be for every American to serve a year in the military, IN COMBAT, preferably in Syria or some other Islamic despotic terrorist breeding ground, and actually achieve at least one confirmed kill.

This way we can all share in the good work of stamping out this plague of Islamism.

Too bad you couldn't get a real job Librarian.

It sounds like you were rejected by the military and had to settle for a two-bit government job at low wages. Looks like you got what you deserve.

Combat jobs are waiting for Fresca and Impartial Observer on the West Bank - security guard positions at illegal settlements. The inmates of these things - mostly religious fanatics who grew up in Brooklyn, New Jersey, Chicago or Los Angeles - will be glad to pay you, although your wages will be far lower than what librarians make in the US, or even in Israel. Since combat is good for the mind and soul, surely you won't mind being shot at or killing 12 year-olds. And your very presence in Israel wil help stave off the moment when Arabs become a numerical majority of the population in Israel by, say, five minutes or so. But then again, you won't really be in Israel, unless the West Bank is annexed, which could lead to a nuclear confrontation that will make all such questions moot.

Another possibility would be to move to LA and look for work as extras or even part-time actors. Do you remember that terrible tv show "Renegade"? One of the all time worst. The villains always looked like the production crew rounded them up outside some liquor store or check cashing business and promised them ten dollars and a free six-pack if they took part in the show. So you two will fit right in. As that great thinker Wayne Dyer says, the sky's the limit. So it could be Renegade today and the big time tomorrow - the Jerry Springer Show.

Most people who go into the military are meatheads. It's a simple fact. They are above average, on the average, but if you got rid of all the smart kids who are joining up to pay for college, you're not talking about an exceptional group of people.

And, despite what some recruiters are apparantly telling these kids, just because they score highly on this test does not mean that whatever branch of the service they join is in any way legally operated to give them a so-called good job. They may still wind up in humvees, riding around as slowly moving targets.

Meyer, what the hell are you rambling on about now?

What is this obsession of yours with some forgotten show called renegades?

I think you need to go to the middle east and light up one of these swarthy terrorists. It'd do you some good.

"we don't stock books on how to commit suicide "

A "librarian" who never heard of "Final Exit." How sad.

Liberal pseudo-intellectuals (the term 'pseudo' here is forever redundant) ragging on the military don't make for a safer world, while klling fanatical towelheads does.

End of line.

We don't stock that title, although we could probably get a copy if we knew you were the only person who was going to check it out.
