Contemporary Art of Cuba

Although Cuba is a small island nation, it has a cultural breadth of character immense for its size. Our panel discussion, “Contemporary Art of Cuba” will touch on how and why contemporary Cuban art achieved international status, and who are some of the rising art stars.

In support of the exhibit, “Ruben Rodriguez: Erotic Art From Cuba”, the Avenue 50 Studio will host a panel discussion with art historian Shifra M. Goldman, PhD, and Adolfo V. Nodal, author of “Memoria: Cuban Art of the 20th Century”. Mr. Nodal will have books available for sale.

Shifra M. Goldman has a PhD in art history from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), with a specialization in modern Latin America. She is a Research Associate with the Latin American Center, UCLA; has taught art history at California State University, Los Angeles; and has taught modern Latin American art at UCLA since 1994. Dr. Goldman is currently working on her fourth book about modern Latin American art.

Adolph V. Nodal emigrated to the U.S. from Cuba in 1957. He held the position of General Manager of the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department from 1988-2001. Over the last 15 years, he has presented to Los Angeles, artists of Cuban descent. Mr. Nodal is a founding member and producer of Proyecto Memoria Memoria. Archivo de Artes Visuales Cubanas. He is one of the authors of “Memoria: Cuban Art of the 20th Century”. Mr. Nodal lives and works in Los Angeles.
