Violation of policy

by nonan@rchist Friday, Jan. 09, 2004 at 12:14 AM

Looks like la-imc is in direct violation of its own privacy policy.

Looks like la-imc is in direct violation of its own privacy policy.

http://la.indymedia.org/process/privacy.php

"The LA-IMC web server does not track the domains or IP addresses from which people visit and/or post to the sf.indymedia.org web site. Usage of other services, however, may be logged."

[...]

"At no time, unless a user specifically authorizes such disclosure, will the LA-IMC disclose individual user personal information that is not publicly available to unrelated third parties."

"In the event that the LA IMC becomes aware that site security is compromised or nonpublic user information has been disclosed to unrelated third parties as a result of external activity, including but not limited to law enforcement activities or external security attacks, the LA IMC shall take reasonable measures which it deems appropriate, including internal investigation and, if required, cooperation with our web host, Transbay.Net.

If the LA IMC becomes aware that a user's personal information provided to the LA IMC has been disclosed in a manner not permitted by this Privacy Policy, the LA IMC shall make reasonable efforts to notify the affected user, as soon as reasonably possible, of what information has been disclosed, to the extent that the LA IMC knows this information."

I consider my IP address to be personal information.

Now, la-imc, you need to either remove your little "yellow star" feature, or change your privacy policy to reflect the feature.

But I'm guessing you'll do neither.

Man, you people are so afraid of differing viewpoints, aren't you?

Cowards.

Oh, just so's you know...

by nonanarchist Friday, Jan. 09, 2004 at 12:27 AM

If anything happens to my PC due to your little Naziesque feature, I know a fine lawyer who would love to give me the keys to la-imc.

Hmmm...

I wonder what sound it would make under a bulldozer...?

sorry bout that, my bad

by johnk Friday, Jan. 09, 2004 at 1:39 AM

I *thought* we'd written that in there. Oh well, my bad. Bad programmer. I guess, being an anarchist, I'm not very good with rules.

I'm recoding the feature to hash the IP to an MD5 string. This will hide the IP, but the value of the string will be consistent across posts. Note that this feature is only on as a result of someone within the organization having added your name to a list of IPs associated with disruptive posters.

As for the lawsuit, I'm not sure if your IP *is* protected. I'm on other web boards that record and can display the IP for every single post.

that policy needs to be rewritten

by johnk Friday, Jan. 09, 2004 at 1:52 AM

It applies to the servers operated on transbay.net, and LA isn't. (That's why there's the sf. reference.) We do turn on some minimal IP logging of posts (not of surfers) to deal with spamming.

Please try out the new MD5 feature, as it will now no longer expose your IP, though, at another level, I wish it did.

As for catching the IPs, it's possible to get IPs by adding an image that's on your server to a comment. Then you'll get a bunch of IPs, and can proceed to try and hack these addresses.

Of course, there's a lot of deniability. There are hack scripts scanning consumer IP subnets all the time, looking for vulnerable routers.

The main reason I added this feature is to embarrass disruptive posters without decreasing their freedom of speech. Some people, I've learned, have a higher tolerance for personal humiliation and a zest for making fools of themselves in public than others.

Violation of policy ?

by Alan Friday, Jan. 09, 2004 at 1:59 AM

Embarrass me?

by ;lkjlhh Friday, Jan. 09, 2004 at 2:07 AM

Hardly.

Like I said, it smacks more of the "Jude" yellow star the Nazis put on Jews' homes.

Admit it: you just cannot handle disagreement. You have to hide behind "ignore" lists, showing IP addresses, and the time-honored imc tradition of calling anyone who dares dissent "shill" and Brown Shirt".

When I first came here, I tried debating the issues presented, only to find out damn quick that nobody here was interested in debate. All they wanted was blind acceptance of the conspiracy theory du jour and another heapin' helpin' of mindless knee-jerk Bush hate. So I said to heck with it, I'm gonna have me some fun at your expense.

Get over it. And while you're at it, get over yourselves.

Until you goons have your revolution (snicker!), it's a free country, and I will post here what I want, when I want.

You are free to disagree with me. I don't care. The right to have and express your own opinion is a basic human right, guaranteed to Americans by the Constitution which I swore to protect with my life.

You may not like what I say. I may not like what you say. But I will defend to the death your right to say it.

How many of you would do the same for me, I wonder?

a few differences between the IMC and Nazis

by johnk Friday, Jan. 09, 2004 at 2:31 AM

The Nazis were a political party.

The Nazis were patriotic nationalists, just like you, nonanarchist.

The Nazis liked war and militarism, just like you, nonanarchist.

The Nazis hated communists, just like you, nonanarchist.

You're not getting tagged with the yellow star of an oppressed person in a ghetto, but with the crooked cross of a supporter of patriotism, nationalism, and war.

You're also getting tagged with this code because you're abusing your freedom to post from different names, and actively circumventing other readers' ability to ignore you by name. You are being extremely anti-social.

The fact that you have free speech, which IMC pays for, despite your insistent insults, disruptive behavior, and generally unfriendly disposition, is some kind of proof that we do invite open discussion, and place a higher value on that than we do on maintaining a website that is inviting to activists.

You have repeatedly verbally attacked people, creating an atmosphere inimical to free expression.

PS - that appended message is pretty long. I think it needs to be chopped a bit.

It's better than TV

by Barney Friday, Jan. 09, 2004 at 2:32 AM

It's interactive entertainment!!

It's so funny to see these dorks getting it wrong again and again and again.

Have y'all heard about the anarchist group in Italy? They're called the FAI and they've been sending round letterbombs to various EU leaders. Needless to say there is a "scholl of opinion" that this is some kind of Black Ops peration by Italian secret servies. Hee hee!!

But on a serious note, not one of those losers condemned this terrorism .

Hold on a second

by Barney Friday, Jan. 09, 2004 at 2:36 AM

I don't find nonanarchist offensive or insulting in any wat. Speak for yourself there, honcho. I'm not one of your brainwashed collective, I have an opinion of my own.

Abusing your freedom of speech means trying to undermine your government, which is the crime you communist/anarchist/terrorist supporters are guilty of.

You'll find that nonanarchist is someone who loves ans values the freedoms we enjoy.

oh another thing

by johnk Friday, Jan. 09, 2004 at 2:40 AM

If you find having nonstop arguments and hurling insults a few hours a day is "fun", I suggest you take up a more personally fulfilling hobby.

One of the reasons I wrote "ignore" was to give readers a tool to avoid posts by specific writers, without encroaching on that writer's ability to post. It's not something anyone "hides behind" but is more like a simple tool to filter out unwanted noise.

It's up to you, nonanarchist, to learn to play nice, and have your ideas taken seriously. If you don't like the people who insult you, you can click on "ignore" and ignore them, and maintain your composure.

Do you dislike what I write? Does it inspire you to anger and hate? Click on ignore.

Nonanarchist has been rude and offensive. He toned down a bit when he's called out on it, but, he can go off sometimes.

You were pretty rude there for a while, but I removed you from my ignore list. You'll stay off it unless you piss me off. What I do, however, won't affect whether others see your posts or not.

His latest screed's been about this new feature that identifies individuals by their IP address, if the IP is listed in a file we keep. So far, there are four IPs on there, and I think two are in use currently. (I altered the feature to hide the IP, so, anonymity is maintained.)

These features are all various social controls I'm playing with to create a space where people can discuss politics. Note that we don't have membership here yet. We don't ban users. We don't moderate or edit posts before they go up. We give front page access to these messages.

Furthermore, though we have a specific political perspective, our organization is not a closed collective. Things are done in the open. We act as if freedom is something that people exercise daily, not something that's hoarded and used sparingly when the government says it's okay to exercise it.

PS - As for the letterbombs - it's not really my issue - but the real FAI has denounced the letterbombs sent by the "Informal Anarchist Federation" and accused them of being a plot to discredit the Italian Anarchist Federation, who didn't send the bombs.

Oh the horror!

Imagine...being patriot...having loyalty to your country..and supporting a long overdue war against a subhuman enemy.

"A long overdue war against a SUBHUMAN ENEMY"???

My, that phrase certainly sounds familiar. Can't quite put my finger on it, but it seems to be associated with something involving a crooked cross.

Funny how someone can get so exercised about a mere Web site that they end up blurting out more than they probably wanted to...

long overdue

by johnk Friday, Jan. 09, 2004 at 11:37 AM

A long overdue war? A subhuman enemy?

Jeeeeeeeeeeeeezus. Someone's been drinking that government Kool-Aid straight from the pitcher.

At least have the wit to disguise your racism under the guise of neoliberal imperialism. How about, "it was a necessary invasion to seize control of a recalcitrant and difficult to control nation that would, if occupied, present significant business and national security opportunities in a region that's vital to the functioning of energy-dependent, expansionist, transnational corporations."

That's something, I think, most conservatives could recap with a straight face. It sounds official at least. Maybe it wouldn't play so well in Peoria, but I imagine some Democrats would go along with that logic, at least in private. You win some, you lose some.

The weird fallout of this war, to me, is that Libya is ass-kissing the UN, and might find itself some allies in the US and Europe. Libya's consistently funded terrorists against Israel and the West, and successfully attacked over and over. What a move! Khaddafi is the dictator that Saddam wishes he were.

This War on Terrorism might prove to be even stranger and more confusing than the War on Drugs. It should be called "The War on Terrorism, on Drugs."

Interesting.

by ;ljlihouih Friday, Jan. 09, 2004 at 12:58 PM

Earlier I wrote:

"You may not like what I say. I may not like what you say. But I will defend to the death your right to say it.

How many of you would do the same for me, I wonder?"

The silence in response to that question is deafening.

A few quick notes:

BA -- You misspelled it. It's "kolektive".

johnk -- Yes, I love my country, the greatest nation in history. Gasp! Why do you have a problem with that? I don't love war; but unlike most people here, I do realize that sometimes it's necessary. If you just sit around singing "Kum Bah Yah", you're gonna get steamrolled. That's a simple fact.

Me, posting from different names? Nope. In my year here, I've used daveman, mr wilson, tpfkamw, and now nonanarchist (which I like the best...well suited for this place). I used them consecutively, not simultaneously. Believe me, I thank you for allowing me to come here and have fun. If I had any extra cash to spare, I'd definitely slide you some in return for the fun and interesting conversations. But let me explain something to you: While IMC may invite open discussions, the regular posters do not. While I have verbally attacked people, I have been treated to the same. Thanks for pointing out the double standard for me. And answer me this: If your views and politics cannot tolerate being ridiculed, how in the world do you ever hope to see them dominant in this country? I'm playing softball with you guys. The folks at places like Free Republic would likely as not shoot you where you stand. Now, if you can't take a joke...but of course you can't. You and your bunch are notoriously lacking a sense of humor.

I will never use the ignore feature. To me, it's the coward's way out. To use it proves that you cannot tolerate dissenting viewpoints. Further, if I get upset over something someone posts on an anonymous message board, then there is something seriously wrong. If anybody here gets mad at me over what I write, sheesh! Get over it! You're taking this stuff WAY too personally.

Anarchist: HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! There. That's all the response what you posted deserves. Don't like it? Feel free to ignore me. Oops! Sorry; you can't. Hi de ho.

I formally resign from my position.

by Max Friday, Jan. 09, 2004 at 2:22 PM

NA, BA, fresca, et al. you guys are the best.

But I've had enough of these clowns.

I'm hearby retiring from LA-IMC,as it has ceased to be fun or entertaining.

These libs can't take a joke and will obviously never learn. Daveman summed it up best; you can't train a pig.

I'd rather let them walk around in a hazy world, thinking they are somehow significant than to waste any more of my valuable time being hospitable.

I think I'll go over to FreeRepublic now and join forces with my fellow American brothers and sisters.

And in closing, a note to all my little anarchist and revolutionary indymedia friends:

I am a very real person, and a very real patriot. I haven't been paid one single dime to type any of my words to you.

But mark them well.

I am but one of the MILLIONS of Americans, both on the left, the right, and the center, that considers this country, it's belongings, government, and military to be mine. WE are America; you are but a minority of deluded radical revolutionaries and an insignificant minority at that.

But should your politics EVER REAR ITS UGLY HEAD IN MY NATION...

SHOULD YOU EVER SOMEDAY DECIDE TO RISE UP AND USURP THIS NATION, ITS CITIZENRY OR ITS GOVERNMENT...

I WILL BE THERE.

And I will not be alone.

It would serve you well to never forget that.

Because you WILL be put down, by force, if necessary.

And if you don't like it, you're free to leave any time you choose.

And with that, I bid you a long, overdue farewell.

Bitches.

by Sheepdog Friday, Jan. 09, 2004 at 7:10 PM

I know that I post some pugnacious articles and they tend to be a bit strong in the language dept ( resulting in some of them being hidden ) so I was curious to see if I was on the collective shit list.
If I am, I'm not sorry.
If I have offended anyone it was purely intentional and again, I'm not sorry.
I figure that if I refrain from posting porn or racist remarks I'm staying within the IMC guide lines. Sometimes the dirt requires agitation.
That's all.

"At least have the wit to disguise your racism under the guise of neoliberal imperialism."

John, john, john.

You're fanatical and somewhat embarrassing naitivety is consistent at least.

My views bely no racism of course. There is nothing racist about simply acknowledging that the subculture of miltant fanatical (I guess you have that in common) of Islam is an obvious enemy of America and the entire civilized world. Of course your foolishness (you are after all a self proclaimed "anarchist"... red flag of stupididty) will not allow to to accept this simple fact so you need to defend your delusions by claiming "racism".

That we've been attacked consistently by these subhumans (what else would you call them?) as they attempt to foist their religious tyranny on the world is no secret and not even arguable.

Face it, you're on the wrong side. Again.

You are actually defending the only racists in the entire equation.

Oh well, people don't expect much more from the johnk's of the world. Carry on waving your embarrassing black flag and finding new ways to desperately break down this site out of fear of the truth.

It's great fun.
