New Willie Nelson song condemns war in Iraq

by inca bunny Friday, Jan. 02, 2004 at 11:22 AM

New Willie Nelson song condemns war in Iraq 31 Dec 31 2003 Reuters DALLAS (Reuters) - Country music icon Willie Nelson has written a Christmas song with an edge -- a protest against the war in Iraq that he hopes will stir passions in those who hear it. Nelson, 70, told Reuters on Wednesday he wrote "Whatever Happened to Peace on Earth" after watching the news on Christmas Day and will play it in Austin, Texas on Saturday at a concert to benefit Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich.

New Willie Nelson so...

Nelson said his new song criticized the Bush administration's decision to invade Iraq and those who thought it unpatriotic to speak out against the war.

The song opens with the line "How much oil is one human life worth?" and swings into the chorus: "Hell they won't lie to me/ Not on my own damn TV/ But how much is a liar's word worth/ And whatever happened to peace on earth?"

"I hope that there is some controversy," said the country singer, who has five nominations in the upcoming Grammy Awards. "If you write something like this and nobody says anything, then you probably haven't struck a nerve. "I got it out of my system. I was able to say what I was thinking," Nelson said.

What Ever Happened To Peace On Earth
by Willie Nelson

There's so many things going on in the world
Babies dying
Mothers crying
How much oil is one human life worth
And what ever happened to peace on earth

We believe everything that they tell us
They're gonna' kill us
So we gotta' kill them first
But I remember a commandment
Thou shall not kill
How much is that soldier's life worth
And whatever happened to peace on earth

(Bridge)
And the bewildered herd is still believing
Everything we've been told from our birth
Hell they won't lie to me
Not on my own damn TV
But how much is a liar's word worth
And whatever happened to peace on earth

So I guess it's just
Do unto others before they do it to you
Let's just kill em' all and let God sort em' out
Is this what God wants us to do

(Repeat Bridge)
And the bewildered herd is still believing
Everything we've been told from our birth
Hell they won't lie to me
Not on my own damn TV
But how much is a liar's word worth
And whatever happened to peace on earth

Now you probably won't hear this on your radio
Probably not on your local TV
But if there's a time, and if you're ever so inclined
You can always hear it from me
How much is one picker's word worth
And whatever happened to peace on earth

But don't confuse caring for weakness
You can't put that label on me
The truth is my weapon of mass protection
And I believe truth sets you free

(Bridge)
And the bewildered herd is still believing
Everything we've been told from our birth
Hell they won't lie to me
Not on my own damn TV
But how much is a liar's word worth
And whatever happened to peace on earth

Where was Willie?

by Commie Friday, Jan. 02, 2004 at 7:26 PM

Where was this drunk when Bill Clinton was bombing the shit out of Iraq and enforcing sanctions that cost more than 1 million lives?

Was he lying in a gutter somewhere when all of this was going on?

Or does he think its peachy keen for Democrats to kill Iraqis?

To a living legend.

by Dannie Friday, Jan. 02, 2004 at 10:48 PM

Willie, all my life I've LOVED, and enjoyed your music.I could always find relaxation and a sence of freedom
in it. Thank you for your influence!!!
That being said, I dont belive nor support your stand on this issue. I was so damn ashamed of my own Country's leaders {Canada } at the start af the conflict. I only wish we could have traded leaders!!
At any rate, God made us all with our own mind. He gave us the ability to form our own opinion's. I'll continue to listen to and love your music! With,of course the exception of this song!!!

Thanks, Willie, I Needed That

by Sendemback ToCrawford Monday, Jan. 05, 2004 at 9:25 AM

Thanks, Willie, for writing that song. Yes, that "liar" is not the only CEO of our country who has done wrong -- but if YOU deserve 5 Grammies for your efforts, THAT character deserves at least as many "Guantanamo awards "(I just thought that one up) for greed, hypocrisy, lack of vision, pathetic plastic-turkey photo-ops, and ignorance.
From the time you stood up with the "Killer D´s" in their fight against redistricting, I knew going on tour with Toby Keith didn´t mean you agreed with his amazingly ignorant attitude (contrasted, IMO, by his considerable talent, which I feel is wasted with songs like the "Angry American". I want to hear more songs like "Peace On Earth" -- to quote the Dixie Chicks, "We Need More Love".

Truth

by Tom Wednesday, Jan. 07, 2004 at 1:35 AM

Willie is a patriot living free in America.

Evil people masquerade as patriots and say its unpatriotic to question authority. Bush wants to legalize illegal immigrants. If Homeland security was not a masquerade Bush would be rounding up illegals for questioning. Enemy invaders are infiltrating our country. mexicans and poor I don't mind. It's the others who come in who scare me.

The oil companies are living rich and only want money. Somethings in life are worth more than money. Money can't buy love, clean air, clean water, or clean living. I am disgusted with the corruption of Capitalism .Every one needs to earn a living, but- I was watching a Bill Moyers TV show featuring oil companies extravagant lifestyles while outside their Nigerian Compound local people were eating seafood found in the same water they urinated and defecated in. Those kind of people are so arrogant and self righteous. Saddam Hussein is accused of not taking care of his people and acting like Hitler. Saddam was cruel but it sometimes seems the pot is calling the kettle black.

Like the Bible says - they (oil companies, oil politicians) should stop complaining about the speck in Saddams eye and take care of the log in their own! Oh I know I offend those people by mentioning the Bible. Get over it.

America has become a battlefield between Nazis and communists. It's as though real Americans don't count. They will soon see that we do. Go Willie!

Dear Sir
There are still noble men left on this earth who are willing to risk their lives, careers and fortune to tell the truth as it should be done.
Willie Nelson is brave and honest poet who speaks from the heart. It is people like him who deserve respect for using their power to bring awareness to the people who have been given so much propaganda and spin over the news regarding the war in Iraq. The conservative estimate is that about 6,000 to 10,000 men women and children have been killed since the war in Iraq began. Each death is sad when it is caused deliberately.
People may have the devil's conscience to turn away when the death takes place in another country but how long this self-denial?
Thanks you Willie for your integrity.
Hope the message of peace is conveyed by your poetry and may you write many more so that evil is crushed by sheer power of your words.
God Bless you.

There sure is alot of anger out there. Willie is right, "whatever happened to peace on earth". Regardless of our opinions, we sure could use more peace on earth.

"Peace on earth".

Fine sentiments there. It's a pity that everyone doesn't think like that. Like Saddam, like Kim Il, like Osama Bin Liner. You have 2 choices:

1. Stick your head in the sand and hope everybody will play nice.

2. Defend yourself and eliminate the threat.

Which do you do?
