In today (Dec. 6, 2003) news:
The UN war crimes court sentenced Bosnian Serb general Stanislav Galic to 20 years in prison over the 44-month siege of Sarajevo that left thousands dead during the 1992-95 Bosnian war.
The general, who during two years led the Bosnian Serb troops that laid siege to the Muslim-held city, is the first person to be convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) over the events in the Bosnian capital.
The three-judge panel ruled that troops under Galic's command deliberately targeted civilians during the siege.
"The civilian population of Sarajevo -- men and women of all ages, including children -- were killed in their hundreds and wounded in their thousands, with the intent to terrorise the entirety of the population," presiding judge Alphons Orie, of the Netherlands, said.
"They were attacked while attending funerals, while in ambulances, trams, buses and while cycling ... Children were targeted while playing or walking in the street."
Galic was convicted of "acts of violence the primary purpose of which is to spread terror under the civilian population", murder, and inhumane acts.
