On this thursday afternoon, in the Manguinhos shanty-town, in the suburbs of Rio, Brazil, Marcos Vinicius Oliveira dos Santos, 19, was shot to death. As a protest, the residents threw garbage cans in Avenida dos Democraticos, a street close to the shanty-town.

According witnesses, state military policemen from 22th BPM (state military police battalion) shot the young man in front of a house in Isa street, inside Manguinhos. Marcos was taken to Bonsucesso hospital but he died before arriving.

Witnesses said that journalists were prevented from accessing the area by state military policemen. One cameraman from TV Record was threatend with having his camera broken if he insisted on filming. Residents and relatives issued a complaint at the 21th police station at Bonsucesso.

This is another chapter of the story of non-official death penalty in Brazil.
