Direct action taken 11/15/03 at Vons in Mar Vista in support of the striking Food Workers.

At 2:00 pm Saturday, the Mar Vista Neighbors for Peace and Justice took a
direct action in support of the striking Food Workers.

In the Vons on Centinella and Washington Place, they loaded their carts with
food, and either checked the groceries through and declined to pay, or
abandoned their carts. Then the Vigilistas joined the picket line, unfurled
their banner and stood with the striking union members.

The action cheered the spirits of the union members and successfully disrupted the business inside the store for a number of hours
as "replacement employees" scrambled to delete the hundreds of dollars worth
of scanned merchandise and return the melting ice cream to the freezers.

The latest issue of the Mar Vista Free Press (entitled "Join the Food
Fight!") was distributed to shoppers who crossed the picket line.

The Mar Vista Neighbors for Peace and Justice is a nonprofit collective of
Mar Vista residents promoting action for peace and social justice in the
community. A weekly candlelight vigil is held every Friday night from 6:30
to 7:30 at the corner of McLaughlin and Palms. The Mar Vista Free Press is
a monthly publication devoted to raising awareness and promoting actions in
the community. All five issues may be downloaded at the MVNPJ website:
www.marvista4peace.8k.com.

The MVNPJ Vigilistas have "adopted" a number of UFCW picket lines across the
west side of Los Angeles. This has involved providing water and goodies,
distributing the recent Free Press, and marching with the strikers. More
direct actions are in the works. Stay tuned!
