Sunday November 9th Marks the Day the Berlin Wall Came Down

SANTA MONICA, CA (November 9) – Hundreds of protesters are expected today to participate with local Jewish and Palestinian human rights groups working together to erect a symbolic replica of the fortified wall being built by the Israeli government annexing the West Bank. Members of Women in Black-LA, the Palestinian Aid Society and their supporters will build a 10-foot-tall cardboard replica of the 30-foot-tall ‘Apartheid Wall’ at the Palisades Park in Santa Monica. The 400 mile-long wall in the Middle East is a massive barrier, which runs deep into Palestinian territory, is made up of a series of fortifications 200 to 300 feet wide, including a 27-ft. high concrete wall, razor wire and electrified fences, roads and trenches, with guard towers and electronic surveillance stations. In over 60 cities across 21 countries including Israel there will be protests against the 'Apartheid Wall' during the week of November 9th.

WHEN: Sunday, Nov. 9th 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM

WHERE: Palisades Park at Ocean Ave. & Colorado Blvd., SM

WHO: Speakers include George Rishmawi from the Holy Land Trust in Bethlehem, Rabbi Leonard Beerman, world-renowned rabbi emeritus of Leo Baeck Temple, USC Professor Hagit Borer and the Rev. Darrel Meyers. Dr. Laila al-Marayati will emcee.

WHAT: Street theater 10-foot–tall cardboard replica of the 30-foot-tall ‘Apartheid Wall’ will be erected at Palisades Park, Santa Monica. Two scenes from "Convergence," a play dramatizing the conflict between Jews and Palestinians in Israel and the occupied territories, performed by Blue Sphere Alliance. Poetry readings, Arabic music and a dramatic reading by actress Miri Harvach on the hardships created by the wall. Trumpets will herald a dramatic finale as the ‘Wall’ is brought down at approx. 2:30 PM.
