Now what is carbon sequestration and why do we need to know about it? As Senator Pat Roberts says “Agriculture can answer the challenge of climate change while feeding a troubled and hungry world.”

“For nearly 6 years I’ve been working on this natural activity called carbon sequestration. Staff can’t seem to come up with a simpler description, so let’s try mine.
Carbon in the air bad, Carbon in soil good. Let’s all repeat that a couple of times.
Many folks wonder why I get so charged up on carbon sequestration. It started at the South Pole. On a fact-finding trip to see important environmental research taking place there, I met a top-notch NOAA researcher. He told me about his team’s research; from 1988 to 1992, North America farms, ranches, and forests (we don’t have many of those in Kansas) absorbed as much carbon dioxide as was produced by cars, power plants, and other fossil fuel users.
Immediately, I thought of the Conservation Reserve Program and all the other programs that FSA and the Natural Resource Conservation Service have to help producers here in Kansas and across the country to implement best management plans.
When I got back from the South Pole, I got in touch with the best carbon researcher, Dr. Chuck Rice from Kansas State University. Chuck and I worked on a bill that passed the Senate. We were able to take parts of the bill and put them into the crop insurance bill along with million for research."
