UFCW STRIKE

by X SCAB BUSTER Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003 at 3:49 PM

I SUPPORT THEIR EFFORTS!

UNIONS ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO BE BUSTED BY COMPANIES. YOU DON'T KNOW HOW GOOD IT IS TO WORK FOR A UNION CONTRACT COMPANY UNTIL YOU LOSE IT! I WAS IN THE GROCERY STORE STRIKE IN 1985 AND AM STILL PROUD OF IT!

SCAB'S ARE PEOPLE WHOM CAN'T GET A JOB OF THEIR OWN!

I WISH THAT I STILL WORKED UNION!!!

NOW I WORK FOR PEANUTS . . .

I was just thinking about this - there's some jerks here saying that unions suck and hurt business, but if that's the case, why is it that the unionized markets are nicer, cleaner, and fancier than the non-union markets? High turnover and pissed off workers naturally lead to shoddy goods. Look at Hollywood, a very union town. Sure, the movies are expensive to make, but people with the union card, they have nice lives, the movies are flashy and, at least in craft, more impressive than movies from other countries.

Look at your typical non-union job. Look at fast food, where there's a bunch of "assistant managers" who really aren't managers at all. but given that title to union-bust. People work hard, and make shit for wages. A few get promoted to assistant manager, and still make shit. The shops make so much money, and it all gets pocketed by the owners. It's a g.d. food factory and it's pumping out crap.

Whoever this 32 yr old Knight is can't write worth a shit. I doubt the union members are any better at composing letters. They should count their lucky stars they get hired at all.

Mr. Knight,

We are in receipt of your e-mail. There are plenty of people who will jump at the

chance at getting paid .00/hr for jobs that require the intelligence of a gerbil.

It is also noted that you are a job-jumper and obviously you are very familiar

with sitting through job orientation secessions. We would prefer individuals who

take their work and the companies that hire them more seriously. Also, we

prefer to have people working for us who are active, not sitting by the phone hoping

a company offering a job will call, and considering that to be hard work.

We thank you for your imput. Whenever you learn how to properly compose a letter,

I'm sure you'll be more than qualified to tell a large corporation exactly how to manage it affairs.

Sincerely,

Albertson's

grocery scabs are people who can stock shelves, run a scanner over a bag of doritos, pronounce "paper or plastic" half way decent and dont require 17 dollars per hour and fully paid health care, in order to do it.

Those poor union workers always get a raw deal. Sociaty cant function with out their very valueable services.............hey but wait a tick,,,,how does wallmart do it, and so efficiently????

I personally don't care what Mr. Knight's grammar or penmanship looks like. I HIGHLY respect a man who respects the picket line. I am here to say that I appreciate the company I work for. I respect the level of quality that they are demanding of me. I am an east coast member of local 27 working for Safeway. My contract will be coming up in March. I can tell you that whatevert he results in California will be rolling my way.I give my job all i have, and yes I am paid well. For the first time in my life I am working for a company that gives according to seniority instead of having to kiss somebody's butt to get a .15 raise! I have been working for safeway for 6 yrs. now and I am proud to do the best job I can for the company!(for those interested...high school graduate, 2 yrs. college with no degree, self-taught on the computer) I WILL stand the picket line and find night work where I must!!! I will stand proud of my co-workers and myself to being able to stand firm for what we deserve! We're not asking that everything get better(more money), just don't take away what we must work hard and endure for! Did any of you know that working under the contract I am under I had to work 18 months to get health coverage? I DID! I endured and proved myself to my company! I will do what I must!!!

Look At Reality....

by krankyman Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003 at 12:11 PM

Corporations are one of the lowest forms of life(artifical admittedly) on the face of the earth. And so are the egg sucking CEO's that run them. Until we rid the US of the maniacal, greedy corporations this will only happen more often until the US has the wage scale of a Third World country. Basically what corporations say to the workers is this,"Fuck you.Take what we give you, screw your families, if you get sick make sure you show up early and work late,if your kids get sick, well, fuck them too. And if the Bush Administration can get it's way kiss that overtime goodbye. You are here for one reason and one reason only to make life comfortable for the morons on top. " Once again cheap labor conservatives believe that profits count more than a decent society.

Get a career

by Donald Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003 at 2:19 AM

Corporations say f. u. if you have no technical skills.

Because there is someone behind you who can do your job for less.

Whats the big skills in bagging food?

We are talking absolutly no skills.

Its labor work, muscle not brains.

There are few brainy people but millions of labor able folks.

Get real, you guys mop floors and stack cabbages.

Get a real job!

Not a part time, after school job.

Paper or plastic is not a career.

I'm gonna have to give kranky 10 EV points for that barrage of senseless and fantastical rambling.

Not only was it imaginatively stupid and utterly incorrect. he also tried to make a case for disbanding all corporations and therefore casting almost the ENTIRE workforce of the world into hunger.

Well Played Sir!

Once again the level of discourse has a few cheap labor conservatives high fiving each other over adolescent name calling. Whhoooo. Your so intellectually superior. Ha! And yes corporations do pay for skills like...hmmm...cooking the books.....brown-nosing to get a promotion....let's see .....lying(or what they call Public Relations)......lobbying(Here Senator here's 100,00 grand, now we want a tax write-off) oooo...that's tough work. Ordering around office workers"hey Mona get me another cup of coffee and a donut before I go to the golf course" .....that's another toughie. Another critical job SKILL the corporate shillmeisters need is the ability to fire workers,"Yea lay off 10,000 people. O.K. where's my raise." Wow the intellectual acumen needed for that is truly amazing. And let's not forget the most needed skill of all--union busting. Yes, I know corporations pay a lot for that. Once again the elitism and contempt shown by the cheap labor conservatives just paints the proper picture of what socially retarded human beings there are.

Business

by Melissa Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003 at 1:14 AM

Let's not forget that these companies have a business to run. Yes the top players make a lot of money, as they do in every corporation. If companies like Walmart can do it cheaper and take over the majority of the market, these companies are forced to do something to keep their shares. This strike is a waste of time, these employees should consider themselves lucky that they make as much money as they do, for the jobs they do. The UFCW union is a waste, they keep jobs alive for employees that are undeserving.

In defense of the union and the workers

Melissa wrote, " This strike is a waste of time, these employees should consider themselves lucky that they make as much money as they do, for the jobs they do. The UFCW union is a waste, they keep jobs alive for employees that are undeserving."

When I went to a picket I was asking the workers about the strike and its potential impact on the workers. A lady responded saying that the strike and the faulty contract doesnt just effect the current workers but those workers that have already retired. She witnessed some retirees crying becuase they could lose their health benefits and the coverage that is very expensive and goes beyond the pension that they recieve. If this is the case, then workers will have to ask their families or not recieve the medical treatment. There has been studies that the amount of deaths is growing becuase of this situation. If this occurs with the workers in the supermarket, then it will be becuase the three companies who want to shift one billion dollars of health care expense to the workers. This move by the companies is only to accumulate more money. Last year the three companies made an accumulated 1.6 billion in profits and Ralphs co. made over 5 billion in sales. The CEO alone of ralphs owns over 5 million dollars in stock. Why is balme being put on the workers for defending their health care and you are ignoring the wealth of the company. This cannot be dismissed.

I urge you to go to a picket and talk to the workers your self, other wise your blind alliegence to the "laws" of the market only leads to your irrational conclusion based on the irritational laws of the market.

There is something disturbing about this world looking at the fact that the richest 3 people have the same amount of wealth as the poorest 48 countries. If you happen to think this isnt disturbing then it only proves that you driving logic is the disturbing component to your persona.

Cheers

Javier

Union Accomplishments

by Matt in La Verne Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003 at 8:06 PM

HERE ARE SOME OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF ORGANIZED LABOR!!!

WITHOUT ORGANIZED LABOR YOU WOULD'T HAVE A WEEKEND! STUDY ABOUT SAMUEL GOMPERS!!!

1. Struggled 80 yrs to abolish child labor

2. Struggled 100 yrs to make the 8 hr day and 40 hr work week standard. The companies fought very hard against this. They even hired private militia thugs to harass and even kill strikers. Even Federal Martials attacked strikers on behalf of power, rich companies.

3. Lobbied congress to pass safty in the workplace laws.

4. Helped apply the political pressure to get the Social Security Law enacted.

5. Lobbied congress to add laws against workplace discrimination to the Civil Rights Act. ( This has helped white women more than any other group!!! )

6. Struggled to help workers get PAID SICK LEAVE,

PAID VACATION TIME, PAID HOLIDAYS, PENSION PLANS, etc.

The list goes on but I think it's very clear that the efforts of Organized Labor has created a more "Humane" environment in the workplace that "BENIFITS ALL WORKERS UNION OR NOT!"

SO THOSE OF YOU THAT THINK THAT YOU DON'T NEED UNIONS just study the history of labor in the U. S.

A few key points to research;

1. Haymaker Square Riot

2. Ludlow Massacre

3. Triangle Shirt Fire

4. Samuel Gompers

I am a union worker, I dont have marketable skills or a real career, but I demand 25 dollars per hour.

Just because I slacked off in school and didnt want to learn a trade,

doesnt mean I dont deserve a paycheck equal to a computor programmer or policeman, hey I am in the union.

I bag toilet paper and clean up spills on isle 5,

I am, therefor, I deserve.
