Why Davis Lost the Recall Election

by FeedUP Wednesday, Oct. 08, 2003 at 4:33 PM

Why Davis Lost

After the election dust settles the question being asked, why did Gray Davis lose the Recall. When all the theories are put forth it will come down to one issue, signing the bill to give Illegals driver licenses. Tom McClintock put best why reward them for cutting in line. Let us hear from the masses why Davis Lost California Recall 2003.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

by Ranx Wednesday, Oct. 08, 2003 at 5:39 PM

I disagree in stating that Davis lost because of the "Drivers License" issue. It might have played a factor but certainly not the sole reason. The voters of this state find very little thank him for, especially after the bogus energy crisis and the Enron scandal. He ultimately comes across as wishy-washy character. Compare that with the entertainment value of Arnold's persona and it's not too surprising that Davis would lose. The "DL" is a factor, but only one factor that reinforced the "cult of personality" that surrounds Mr. Universe. The economy sucks, our national politics have sucked tremendously for the last 2 years [much longer of course] and so, believe it or not, the people are probably finding some sort of "hope" in the a man that is larger than life and always "kicks the ass" of the bad guys. People are simply like that.

jimjamtwo@yahoo.com

The Dems lost California because they persisted in backing a strategy to salvage Davis's position. With an only 22 percent approval rating for Davis back in August, there was no way that Californians were going to do anything other than support the recall. Only Dianne Feinstein had the ability to defeat Schwarzenegger, but she foolishly declined to run. Bustamente might have been able to defeat Schwarzenegger, but only if the Dems abandoned Davis and backed him to the hilt. This they did not do, opening the road to the present debacle, which may well be the Democrats' last stand.

That the recall would succeed was apparent to me back in August (see the article I wrote in August on this subject elsewhere on this website). Why don't Democrats wake up to the fact that they need to do whatever it takes to defeat the Republicans?

When faced with political operatives like Karl Rove, isn't it time the Dems got themselves some seriously realistic political strategists? Why did it take this amateur Australian student of American history to work out what no one in California seemed even to suspect, until the depressing poll taken a few days before the vote? Don't the Dems have anyone that can think anymore?

Briefly

by fresca Wednesday, Oct. 08, 2003 at 7:32 PM

"could someone briefly tell me why gray davis was such a fuck up? "

He's run up a huge deficit which in and of itself is not so much the issue, as most states are in deficit as well.

He did however, lie about the deficit in the weeks preceding his last election. People did not dig being told of a 38Billion dollar deficit a few days after electing him.

His latest "balancing" of the budget has turned out to be a complete lie as billions were borrowed in order to present a seemingly balanced budget in order to stave off the recall.

He signed into being a law which allows any non-citizen to obtain THE DE FACTO US id card which is a drivers license. It, for instance, is the ONLY form of id required to register for and to vote. This is a major fuck-up.

His mismanagement has led to California having the lowest credit rating in the Country. The lowest. Lenders and Wall Street mock and laugh at California now.

He has outrightly pandered to special interests and spent a fortune of out budget courting loyalty from Unions, Indian gambling, prison workers unions, etc.

Christ. I'm tired of typing.

At the end of the day his appearance alone is enough.

The guy is a creep.

Yes, only in America.

Only in America can an immigrant with nothing rise to fantastic success in entertainlment, and then become governor of the 6-largest economy in the world.

You see, things like that just can't happen in, say, Sri Lanka or the UAE.

You damn right, only in America.

Florida's Bush/Enron Connection Timeline

by Enlighten the Truth Thursday, Oct. 09, 2003 at 5:55 AM

February 15, 2002
March 7, 2001 -- Enron Lobbyist Bill Bryant e-mails Gov. Jeb Bush requesting a meeting between Enron chairman Ken Lay and Gov. Jeb Bush to discuss energy deregulation.

March 7, 2001 -- Gov. Jeb Bush e-mails Bryant back saying "I would love to meet with Ken."

April 17, 2001 -- A 2 p.m. phone call between Gov. Jeb Bush and Enron chairman Ken Lay appears on Gov. Jeb Bush's daily schedule.

January 18, 2002 -- In an e-mail response to Katie Baur regarding a public records request from the Miami Herald asking for documents regarding communications between the governor's office and Enron, Gov. Bush says "I remember one meeting with Azurix and none with Florida Gas. Nothing happened from the Azurix meeting." The meeting with Azurix -- an Enron subsidiary --happened in September 1999. Gov. Bush does not mention the Ken Lay phone call from nine months earlier.

January 28, 2002 -- Gov. Bush is asked whether he had discussed his desire to deregulate Florida's wholesale electric market with Enron representatives, Bush thought for a moment before shaking his head and saying no. He said the only company to meet with him about deregulation was Duke Energy. (Tampa Tribune 2/7)

February 6, 2002 -- Gov. Bush's Communications Director Katie Baur, responding to a question about Gov. Bush's phone call with Ken Lay, is quoted in the February 7 So. Florida Sun-Sentinel saying: "Enron was the seventh-largest corporation in the nation. They requested a meeting with the governor. They got a phone call. ... Nothing came of the phone call. There's no story here."

February 7, 2002 -- "I don't think I talked to him (Enron CEO Ken Lay). I don't remember talking to him," (Jeb) Bush said Thursday. (AP, Feb. 7, 2002)
Enron took role in state policies
It shaped a Florida plan for deregulation, an Enron lobbyist says.
posted 02/08/02
By CHRIS DAVIS and MICHAEL POLLICK SARASOTA HERALD-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITERS
Enron Corp. played a key, behind-the-scenes role in the formulation of Florida's energy deregulation plan -- Energy 2020.
The Houston-based energy brokerage wanted Gov. Jeb Bush's administration to focus first on allowing independently owned power plants in Florida.
That would allow Enron to quickly move into Florida and set up one of the first "merchant" plants, which sell their electricity to the highest bidder. Enron has been blocked from making money in Florida from merchant plants, because state laws ban plants that don't sell primarily to Florida customers.

Only in other countries, huh?

Are you trying to justify any personal failures here, X?

Don't be an idiot. Immigrants have succeeded in every field here...it's just that the entertainment field, by its very nature, is more visible than most.

Assuming you have any success here, is it more or less than what you achieved in UAE or Sri Lanka?

how do you define success?

Ford F-150, dumb suburban soccer-mUm/wife, 61 inch TV (has to be 1 inch bigger than neighboUr's), 2.5 dumb suburban kids who drink to be cool, and, who have issues about whether they are cool or not, giant 40' camper (must be 5 feet bigger than neigbour's), stupid lawn which i myself will have to mow, dodge caravan for wife, cheap plywood house in some generic suburb, "vote for so and so" campaign ad on lawn, "support our troops" ad on lawn, american flag on lawn, american flag on car, support our troops sticker on car, commuting to work each day, monday night american football with other friends who too have beer guts, dumb wife who cheers for my football team even though she doesnt know what the hell is going on, house in the middle of nowhere - pitch PITCH black at night...?

if thats how you define success
not only am i a failure now,

If that's your image of Americans, please step away from the remote control. Unless you live here, you don't have a clue.

I spent many years living in Europe. I lived in England, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Denmark. I never lived in a coutry that didn't have its own peculiar quirks, nor did I live in one where they didn't make fun of other countries peculiar little quirks. If we were all the same, the planet would be a really dull place.

I could name things about all these countries that made them "soulless dumps", but I'm not going to degrade myself to your lowly level. Suffice it to say the people who were living in these "soulless dump" manners were happy with how they lived their lives and with their peculiar quirks, and that's what mattered.

shut the fuck up. uve already degraded urself by saying "im not going to degrade myself." fuckin idiot statement if ever heard one.

however i do admit that my hatred of suburbs, suburban culture and suburban life does cloud my perception of america as a whole. im sure miami would be a nice place to live. NYC, ive heard from many non-americans, is highly overated and dirty. same with LA.

now to answer nonanarchist's statement.

i moved here just before i finished high school.

by my definition of success, im only starting to succeed here. im only just meeting people who have interests other than "extreme sports" and liquour. i mean theres nothing wrong with someone who likes extreme sports. but there is something wrong when everyfuckingbody is into and only into extreme sports. as u can probably guess, i moved to an all white suburb. i was forever scarred by my experiences there. if ur an adult, you probablydont understand. if ur a kid with a brain, let me just tell u that those kids were melodramatic IDIOTS. such stupid fuckers with no originality or individuality. they fit allllllllllllll the stereotypes.

since im probably many years younger than you, my definition of success is different to yours.
obviously im not yet into the whole "making money" shit.

so so far, i was far more successful in the UAE. although as I already explained, it would be misleading for me to make such a statement.

Thanks for your thoughtful response.

I would hazard a guess that America holds far more opportunities for success than do either UAE or Sri Lanka. Especially for expats in UAE. From what I've see in Middle Eastern countries, if you ain't local, you ain't squat. We had a Sri Lankan house maid when I lived in Oman (lovely woman...my girls loved her, and she loved them. She became part of our family. She was from Kandy, by the way) and she would tell us horror stories about how Omani families had treated her and other expat employees. Most housemaids wanted to work for American or British families so they'd be treated better. Point being: these people, who have a willingness to work hard, would do far better in America than their home countries.

And that's all it takes, really. A willingness to work. That's all America asks, because that's what makes America stronger. If we all succeed, we're all that much better off. It's synergistic. Look at a winning sports team: If every player is at the top of their game, the whole team benefits.

I know what you mean about teenagers. They can be a bunch of whiny robots, can't they? Anyone who doesn't fit in is just a lamb to the slaughter.

Don't worry about traveler. You can safely discount him, I think. For every one like him, there are more that are rational, thoughtful, and reasonable. Just don't expect to find many of 'em on IndyMedia...on either end of the political spectrum. ;-)

I don't hate you, X, for what it's worth. I just hope you can someday see how wonderful America is. Try not to listen to the gloom-and-doom Left these days; they go out of their way to see America as the source of the world's evil, in spite of evidence to the contrary.

If you want to read some essays about America, and her good points, try www.ejectejecteject.com. The essays are long, but will give you a sense of what's right with America.

" the shit i say may be stupid, but at least its a change from the shit that all the other idiots on this site post."

Hee hee! And thanks for that. For what it's worth further, I don't think what you say is stupid. We're looking at the same thing, but seeing it in totally different ways.

As for roads, my vote goes to Qatar.

Why Davis lost

by sisyphus Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003 at 10:33 AM

The very fact that Arnold won provides a clue as to why Davis lost. Schwarzeneggar provided only complaints. The few actual suggested solutions he offered are either illegal or far short of what would be needed to erase the deficit. He is, however, an entertainer, and he provided a campaign with a lot of energy (and a lot of bucks to sell it). His win was a case of image over substance.

Davis, by contrast, is very uncharasmitic and campaigned in a low-key, low-energy style. He was unable to provide a sexy image for the voters, who are poorly informed on the issues.

The Cognitive Elite

by Ffutal Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003 at 11:34 AM

It's been nine years since Charles Murray and the late Richard Herrnstein published "The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life," in which they argued that American society has become stratified along lines of intelligence, so that a "cognitive elite" consisting of people with high IQs who enjoy levels of wealth and power far disproportionate to their numbers. (The book was hugely controversial because of its section on the radioactive subject of racial disparities in IQ scores, but the cognitive-elite argument did not depend on the race section.)

The emergence of a cognitive elite may be inevitable in a knowledge-based economy, but it is a development Murray and Herrnstein viewed with considerable concern. What's fascinating is that liberals, who denounced Murray and Herrnstein over the racial aspect of their book, seem to view rule by the cognitive elite as the natural order of things. And of course they think they are the cognitive elite. I saw this in Jonathan Chait's Bush-hating cover story last month in The New Republic (which was, but is no longer, available online), in which Chait opined that the "striving, educated elite" views the president, because of his success despite his "dullness," as "an affront to the values of the liberal meritocracy." (In 1994 TNR devoted an entire issue to a series of essays on "The Bell Curve"; views ranged from harsh criticism to furious denunciation.)

The same phenomenon is evident in the reaction to Arnold Schwarzenegger's election as governor of California. The Oakland Tribune reports that state Sen. John Vasconcellos, a San Jose Democrat, has called the governor-elect "a boob" and is threatening to leave office on the grounds that he's too good for Californians: "If people want this actor to govern . . . they don't need or deserve me."

http://www.oaklandtribune.com/Stories/0,1413,82%7E1865%7E1686753,00.html

Sacramento Bee blogger Dan Weintraub has an interview with another Democratic state senator, Sheila Kuhl of Santa Monica, who opines that it's up to the Senate "to save the state." When Weintraub asks "from what?" Kuhl replies: "From ignorance. This guy has no idea how to run a state." She tells Weintraub she may skip the governor's State of the State speech, "because frankly I don't think there is going to be a lot of content that anyone's interested in. What's this guy got to say to us about the state of the state? Nothing."

http://www.sacbee.com/static/weblogs/insider/archives/000795.html

And it's not just elected officials. The San Francisco Chronicle hits the streets of the Bay Area, where voters favored keeping Gray Davis in office, and manages to find one Sydney Webster of Oakland, a self-described "hair-color diva," who opines that Bay Area residents are simply "smarter" than people elsewhere in the state.

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2003/10/09/MN204283.DTL

There's no reason to think that liberals actually are smarter than conservatives; there is plenty of brainpower on the political right. And surely Bush's and Schwarzenegger's detractors are mistaken when they characterize them as dull. The president, after all, is a graduate of both Yale and Harvard, and the governor-elect is a self-made immigrant businessman. It is possible for very intelligent people not to be snobs about it, not to adopt the pose of an "intellectual," and that would seem to describe both Bush and Schwarzenegger.

Some liberals also tend to overestimate their own intelligence. Consider this post from the Angry Left Web site DemocraticUnderground.com:

"I would dare to assume that most of us here are in the upper 1%-20% of the population intelligence-wise. We must come to the realization that the majority of the population is in the lower 80% to 99% percent of the bell-curve. WE are not the norm. The Republicans understand that the average American is not very bright. They cater and pander to the masses. The Democratic Party tries to appeal to the population about "issues" that these people just don't understand."

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=495887

If it comes as a revelation to the Democratic Undergrounders that 20% is less than a majority, they're not exactly rocket scientists, are they?

I see 'em, X.

However, you cannot get a sense of America from such a small sample...and if that sample is posting on imc, forget it.

Congratulations on your choice to become a citizen. Just one word of advice: VOTE. I'm not going to tell you for whom; that's up to you. What's important is that you get involved in the process.

Don't listen to the nonentities in here who say voting is pointless.

They're just mad because they're sitting on the sidelines, and forever will be.

yeah man. im a strong advocate of voting.

i dont understand why only like 60% of the country votes. especially during presidential elections. voter turnout should be like 95%

To the morons who don't vote: If you don't vote, you have no right to complain.

I agree; voter turnout should be MUCH higher than it is.

I never have. I've never said anything to anyone that would warrant that kind of comment. Apparantly, this isn't the first time you have. Think about it.

Upon further consideration, I wish to say I am sorry to "traveler" for the immature statement I made. I regret having done so and will in the future be more mindful of what I am saying. Please accept my most humble apology.

You have got to be the most schizophrenic buffoon on this whole website. Please do us all a favor and shut the fuck up. I am so sick of reading your dumb drivel. Go the fuck back to your country.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Cape Verde has, by far, the world's worst roads (all cobblestone) and you can spell "traveler" either way.

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

i didnt want to do it.
but im afraid gonna have to do it.

u see... the problem with america
is that it is a dump.

well actually, that is not the problem.

the problem is that people with gay names like max think the US is not a dump.

when you think that your country is not a dump. what are the chances that you will clean up your country?

hmm... i would say somewhere between zero and none.

the key word here is reality.

max has been brought up to believe that America is the cleanest and most modern country in the world.
that is his reality.

the real reality, is that there exists out in this place called the world, (im not sure if most of you have heard of it) certain countries which are infinitely cleaner and more modern than America (technologically speaking).

Instead of America saying "hey! thats some pretty cool technology, mind giving us the technology so that we too could use it and make our lives better?", America says "This is America, the cleanest most modern country. There is no country out there that could possibly be cleaner and more technologically advanced than ours is, therefore as Americans, we will make no attempt at all to aquire (non-existant) novel technologies present in other countries. Furthermore, since our country is the best, there is no need for us to improve any more."

That my friends, will be the end of "America". Sure America will continue to exist, but it will no longer be "America." It will just become something like New Zealand (No offense to Kiwis) as other countries, such as Japan, take over.

Cellular telephone technology is just one aspect in which the United States is lagging behind.

Oh yeah. Indeed you can spell traveller "traveler", but if you insist on spelling it that way, you will only be speaking American English, as opposed to English.

Hey X...

by Max Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003 at 1:31 PM

"blah blah snivel drip whimper whine moan dump. Piss, groan erk blather spew chunk drip drivel whine whine plop piss grunt snort chortle."

Can you please translate the above for me? I've been searching high and low for someone that speaks "sniveller". You appear to be fluent.

If you think America is a dump, you're obviously not well traveled. In fact, of all the countries in the world I've been, which is an extensive list mind you, that includes every continent on the planet, there's only one place that I consider cleaner than the USA.

Antarctica.

But I'd love to hear more about this "superior technologies" of which you speak. I feel certain that it's not European. Those idiots can't make a toilet work. They also need to work on their HVAC systems and electrical distribution systems.

Grey Davis is a Crook

Grey Davis, by the way, lost because he is a huge crook. We are all suffering in CA because Grey was a Crook... Plain and simple, not a drivers license thing, not a republican/democrat thing, the guy was is and always will be a crook.

You must not be a Californian. If you are, you are pro-democrat before you are pro-truth. If you are a real Californian, you would know the reason is that Grey Davis was and is and always will be a crook. If you continue to hold such childish thoughts such as the one you posted, you are too ignorant to even post on this subject or any other political board. You just do not know what you are talking about.

duh. He was called one of the tops in the field of dirty politics, kept all the figures out of the public eye staing they were under some sort of filing. He put down a man who was clean as could be on TV, (which was easy seeing that the dems run the stations), and made 'suggestions' that were false so the viewrs could make up their minds with bad info, kind of like the dems are doing in spades for the 2004 elections)

New X

oh yeah

could someone briefly tell me why gray davis was such a fuck up?

why on earth did they reelect him if he sucked so bad?
