Immigrant day laborers in the New York Area must deal not only with employers that cheat them, and police that harass them, but also acts of physical violence such as the arson perpetrated against a family in Farmingville, Long Island on the July 4th weekend. Police harassment and arrests of laborers waiting for work at street corners has also increased significantly in the New York City area recently and as a result of Mayor Bloomberg’s new Executive Order on Immigration, many of the undocumented workers being arrested are then sent to the INS for deportation.

But the mostly Mexican day labor community in the New York City area and nationwide are not just waiting for justice. They’re organizing against the unfair conditions created by employers and the governments. And they’re organizing to improve their education and skills to get better jobs.
