The New York Times today has a photo of some brave and awefully tired looking soldiers. In their eyes, one sees the realization of the lies they were told.
"You can't hide your lyin eyes," said The Eagles. I knew that when I looked into Bush's lying eyes at the outset of this war. I know that even more now after seeing the photo of my countrymen in arms. Their eyes show the devastation of realising they have bombed children into the stoneage. They now can see the blood on their hands. The boys in the front line are realising that the premise for war was a lie, for with no TV, they read the whole paper, even the hidden in back truth pages.
With sad eyes they watch the Iraqi's die of thirst, and hunger. With sad eyes they see that they are getting less and less of a chance to come home alive, and so are their wives.
Pacifica recently reported that one captain had to be escorted out of a room full of crying women who wanted their men home. 800 women almost had him for breakfast.
And it's just the beginning. We must remember that widespread dissent over Vietnam did not galvanize until years into the conflict.
This time the conflict drew immediate protest. And for the sake of America's dignity, it only grows.
God bless America, slow to awaken, but rarely decieved for long. One thing Bush cannot overcome is the anger drawn from the families of his own soldiers.
Robber barons and their evil wars have come and gone in the last 200 years. But America has endured. My Jewish grandfather likes to joke, I survived Hitler in Romania, I survived Stalin in Russia, and I'm going to survive Osama in America.
I pray that our Bill of rights is as hardy an old creature as my grandfather. I pray that the fifth reich is voted out of office, and that they take their Osama's and Sadams with them.
Supporting our soldiers would mean bringing them home to their wives. Right now they have short supplies, and short fuses, and even short stacked presidents who stuff their pants. What they need, is a short flight home. Let us make this war an application of the lessons of Vietnam, let's get out, and let someone else deal with the Iraqi suicide bombers. No more MIA, no more POW, no more dead fathers, brothers, sisters, mothers, Americans, not on their soil, no for bush's profit and lies.
