'I Never Promised You A Ruse Garden' A Letter From Michael Moore To George W. Bush

by C/O Diogenes Saturday, Jun. 28, 2003 at 5:30 PM

I don't always agree with Michael Moore but he can be fiendishly witty - as in this Mock Letter to Geeeeee Duhhhhbya.

'I Never Promised You A Ruse Garden'

A Letter From Michael Moore To George W. Bush

6-27-3

Dear Lt. George W. Bush,

I hope you don't mind me referring to you by the only true military rank you ever achieved, that being the one from your on-again, off-again "days" in the, um, Texas Air National Guard. Ever since I saw you in that flyboy outfit, landing on that ship, I assumed you now wanted to be addressed by your military title, as opposed to the civilian rank imposed on you by your dad's friends.

So, Lieutenant, I was wondering, would you do me a favor?

Could you PLEASE do better than a ROSE BUSH?

I saw the guy on TV yesterday that your boys found, the Iraqi who said he had "planted" some nuclear plans in his "back yard" in Baghdad -- 12 years ago -- "under a rose bush."

Woo boy. That's a good one. Do you really think we are as dumb as we look? I know our fascination with "American Idol" and Scott Peterson may make us Americans look a little light in the head, but when it comes to lying to us to lead us into war, we really do demand a bit more of an EFFORT and a FOLLOW-THROUGH.

You see, George, it's not the lying and the doctoring of intelligence that has me all upset. It's that you've had control of Iraq for over two months now -- and you couldn't even find the time to plant just a few nukes or vats of nerve gas and at least make it LOOK like you weren't lying to us.

You see, by not faking some evidence of weapons of mass destruction, it shows that you thought no one would mind if it turned out you made everything up. A different kind of president, who believes that the American public would be outraged if they ever found out the truth, would go to great lengths to cover up his subterfuge.

Johnson did it with the Gulf of Tonkin. He said our ships were "attacked" by the North Vietnamese. They weren't, but he knew he had to at least make it LOOK like it happened. Nixon said he wasn't "a crook," but he knew that wasn't enough, so he paid hush money to the burglars and somehow had 18 1/2 minutes erased from a tape in the Oval Office. Why did he do this? Because he knew the American people would be pissed if they found out the truth.

Your blatant refusal to NOT back up your verbal deception with the kind of fake evidence we have become used to is a slap in our collective American face. It's as if you are saying, "These Americans are so damn apathetic and lazy, we won't have to produce any weapons to back up our claims!" If you had just dug a few silo holes in the last month outside Tikrit, or spread some anthrax around those Winnebagos near Basra, or "discovered" some plutonium with that stash of home movies of Uday Hussein feeding his tigers, then it would have said to us that you thought we might revolt if you were caught in a lie. It would have shown us some *respect*. We honestly wouldn't have cared if it later came out that you planted all the WMD -- sure, we'd be properly peeved, but at least we would have been proud to know that you knew you HAD to back up your phony claims with the real deal!

I guess you finally figured that out this week. It started to appear that millions of us were calling you on your bluff -- those "fictitious reasons for the fictitious war." So you quickly produced this man and his rose bush and some 12-year old piece of paper and some metal parts. CNN broke in at 5:15pm and screamed they had the exclusive! "IRAQI NUCLEAR PLANS FOUND!" But a few good reporters started asking some hard questions -- and, barely 3 hours later, your own administration was forced to admit the plans were "not the smoking gunî proving that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

Oops.

Never a good idea to rely on a bush, Lieutenant.

Yours,

Michael Moore

MMFlint@aol.com

PS. Sorry, I still can't get that padded flyboy suit out of my head. I know, I need help. But when you landed on that carrier, and that banner read, "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED," just what mission was that that was accomplished? 'Cause by my count, more than 50 of our young soldiers have died since you said the mission was accomplished. Anarchy still reigns, the Brits are losing kids, too, and wacko fundamentalists now seem to ready to rule the land. Women are already being told to cover their face and shut their mouths, store owners who sell liquor have been executed, and movie theaters showing "immoral" Hollywood movies have been forced to shut down. And hey, this isn't even west Texas! Maybe you could get back into that jumpsuit, fly over to Baghdad and land at the former Saddam International Airport, jump out and give one of those big happy waves -- under a sign that reads, "MISSION IMPOSSIBLE."

This is great!

Now the self-appointed spokesman for the anti-American ultra-left is condemning Bush for NOT lying.

Seeing as how the cries of Liar, Liar have sort of not panned out due to lack of evidence and interest Moore and his murder now try and spin it the other way and claim that proof of Bush's guilt is the fact that he HASN'T planted evidence.

For once I'm happy to read something by this millionaire fatboy liar. He's illustrated the swiss cheese like quality of typical leftist intellect.

Excellent.

"but don't distort the nature of america's long history of dissent. dissent and criticism is patriotic. "

Couldn't agree with you more.

However, when someone moves from dissent to outright lies in an effort to villify America then that's simply being unAmerican.

Moores lies, as seen in his movies and in his writings serve no purpose than to denigrate the country and make a profit. There is no constructive criticism going on.

Contrary to what you may assume, I don't condemn those who protest or show dissent with a level of sincerety. I simply don't believe that Moore is at all sincere.

Moore has targeted many people. One indication of lies told is if someone is sued in return. No suits yet.

Calling an observation a lie requires one to back-up the claim. Let's go for one example you probably think is a lie. Moore claims Bush benefit from electoral fraud in Florida, where about 100,000 blacks were struck from the ballot rolls.

Fresca, is this a lie?

Yes or no.

If yes, does making that claim make Moore un-American?

Yes or no.

But. If it is tru and Moore is right that hardly means he isn't a liar.

The Duel that wasn't.

The Duel that could never be.

The Duel between Michael Moore and George W. Bush.

That would be patently unfair.

Michael Moore against George Bush would be like a mosquito going up against an elephant. He's irritating and pesky but more a nuisance than a threat.

No need for George to give a twit like Moore the dignity of a reply. He's in a class with a guy like James Carville or Lanny Davis --- and that class is --- "No Class."

Michael Moore got his start with Roger and me a film about what happened to everyday people in his hometown when General Motors shut down it's factories and moved to Mexico and China in favor of relaxed enviromental laws and slave labor. He deals with the truth about what happens to everyday Americans as a result of Rampant corporate crime and coruption in government. And as Corporate Ceos continue to walk away with millions and pention plans continue to evaporate because or Enron type accounting men like Michael Moore, Bill Moyer and Greg Pallast will become moore popular and important than ever. And BUsh Admirer if they would have let Ralph Nader in that debate last election he would have ripped Bush to shreds. Bush was to chicken to even let him in the debate. Now why do you suppose Bush can fly in for one apperance and raise 5 million in an hour. Because these 30 people and others like them want to keep it that way! They are the ones with the serious dough and they support his policies of destroying the new deal ideas of a social saftey net and things like taking care of the poor and old and sick.

Wake up and rise up the one thing I agree with the Anarchists is that I don't think that we can change this with in the political system. I don't know about X's vote from the roof top idea but we need a revolution

since you can't read the whole article (?), here's one:

In Stupid White Men, there is one grotesquerie that better sums up Michael Moore than any of his other crimes against sanity and credibility, a lie so monumental, so preposterous, that it alone should sink the credibility of any supposed “thinker.” I offer this prologue to the following information only because I feel the need to prepare my reader for the mind-blowing scope of Moore’s mendacity.

Michael Moore claims that 5/6th of the U.S. defense budget goes to the development of the Joint Strike Fighter, a space-age fighter jet. Not only is this wrong, it’s so astoundingly absurd that it begs the question of how anyone can trust a person so dumb as to believe the claim in the first place (or so immoral as to intentionally propagate such misformation), let alone publish it internationally. In fact, by my calculations, the Joint Strike Fighter’s budget, which is 250 billion for the entire multi-year plan, represents around 100 billion dollars less than 1/6th of the annual Defense budget from 2001 to 2005 of 1.6 trillion dollars, and that’s assuming that the JSF budget is confined to only those years, which it’s not. In other words, Michael Moore miscalculated by well over 1 TRILLION dollars. This is possibly the most fantastic inaccuracy in the history of well-reviewed journalism; Moore’s off, by the most conservative estimate, by more than the gross national product of India in 1996.

and here's another

3. Moore claims that weapons of mass destruction are made by Lockheed Martin in Littleton and that it might have a connection with the Columbine massacre. Far be it from Moore to insult the memory of those slaughtered at Columbine, but the Lockheed Martin plant in Littleton makes rockets for TV satellites. Then again, nukes sounds much cooler, doesn’t it?

I mean what was Moore trying to point out when he was talking about the joint strike fighter(I'll have to go back and look it up in the book and get back to you) Is that all you can do is try to make it look like he made some kind of mathematical error and then claim he is immoral and a liar for doing it. Make a point !

And i'll tell you his trip to lockhead had everything to do with colombine. They make weapons of death that kill far more innocent people than they do terrorists. Things like cluster bombs and missiles destroy people and civilian infrasturcture.

And regardlees of what you may think about cluster bombs, THEY ARE NOT MADE ANYWHERE NEAR COLUMBINE. The two are utterly unrelated. Moore obviously knew that if he went to all the trouble to research the site for his "documentary". But he LIED anyway. Hoping people wouldn't notice, or worse yet, figuring that people like you would apologize for him.

Why is it so inconcievable that this guy is a liar.

Take a long look in the past. Have you ever witnessed a president who's speaking skills are horrible at best? Well thats the kind of place we live in. Where a president doesn't need brains to rule the world(or have others do it for him). Anybody can say that mr. Moore is a liar or an idiot(which I think is far from the truth), but what he does do is something that far more of us should do. Question. Question this person who speaks in the name of America. I am not the brightest in the bunch, but I have seen some things that have set me on fire. How can a man start a war out of thin air? How does a man get elected in the most suspicious election in history by a state in which his brother is Governor? Why does the president's father have his hand in a company's pocket who's paychecks get fatter when theres war? And the most important question, WHY DOESN'T ANYONE ASK THESE KINDS OF QUESTIONS? Wake up from the hypnotic waves of the T.V. and ask why. Take a good long look at what is actually going on, then ask why.

...you've already made up your mind.

But I'll give it a shot.

In http://www.bowlingfortruth.com/planeplaque.htm:

After the conclusion of the "Wonderful World" montage -- Right after the footage of the airplanes hitting the Twin Towers, Bowling shows a B-52 memorial at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Moore intones:

"The plaque underneath it proudly proclaims that this plane killed Vietnamese people on Christmas Eve 1972."

The point is only half way obvious to most viewers, although even those not catching the direct connection - the understanding is inserted : that the United States government and Al-Qaeda both perpetrate murder by airplane.

In fact, the plaque on the B-52 at the AFA is not so much as Moore describes it. The plaque says :

"B-52D Stratofortress. 'Diamond Lil.' Dedicated to the men and women of the Strategic Air Command who flew and maintained the B-52D throughout its 26-year history in the command. Aircraft 55-083, with over 15,000 flying hours, is one of two B-52Ds credited with a confirmed MIG kill during the Vietnam Conflict Flying out of U-Tapao Royal Thai Naval Airfield in southern Thailand, the crew of 'Diamond Lil' shot down a MIG northeast of Hanoi during 'Linebacker II' action on Christmas Eve, 1972."

Moore lied.

From http://www.bowlingfortruth.com/countries.htm, about the number of gun homicides:

Bowling says 11,127. FBI figures put it a lot lower. They report gun homicides were 8,719 in 2001, 8,661 in 2000, 8,480 in 1999. (2001 UCR, p. 23). Here's the table:

* David Hardy found a way to compute precisely 11,127. Ignore the FBI & use Nat'l Center for Health Statistics figures. These are based on doctors' death certificates rather than police investigation.

Then -- to their gun homicide figures, add the figure for legally-justified homicides: self-defense and police use against criminals. Presto, you have exactly Moore's 11,127. I can see no other way for him to get it.

Since Moore appears to use police figures for the other countries, it's hardly a valid comparison. More to the point, it's misleading since it includes self-defense and police: when we talk of a gun homicide problem we hardly have in mind a woman defending against a rapist, or a cop taking out an armed robber.

Moore lied.

Get it now? Moore is a liar.

That doesn't mean using our political parties to keep some fat cat criminals who never did an honest day's work rich off my taxes as they screw us blind and then charge us for the privilege.

I didn't vote for the moron in the white house because he had no credentials and failed every business he ever worked in.

The 2000 vote just showed me how broken the system is.

I'm voting for Dennis because his makes sense and no one else does anything but lie.

Stop using terms like conservative or leftist or liberal because they have no meaning anymore in these days of doublespeak.

Stop using the term conservative when you are just being lazy and inaccurate.

"The plaque underneath it proudly proclaims that this plane killed Vietnamese people on Christmas Eve 1972."

the crew of 'Diamond Lil' shot down a MIG northeast of Hanoi >during 'Linebacker II' action on Christmas Eve, 1972."
that isn't a lie.

about the number of gun homicides:

Then -- to their gun homicide figures, add the figure for legally-justified homicides: self-defense and police use against criminals. Presto, you have exactly Moore's 11,127. I can see no other way for him to get it.

that isn't a lie.

Want to try again?

The B-52 is a heavy bomber. Saying it killed Vietnamese people implies many civilian casualties...NOT one Vietnamese military aircrew member.

In the gun death figures, Moore compares gun homicides...murders... in other countries to ALL gun deaths in America, to include justifiable police shootings and self defense shootings. He's picking and choosing his data to make his point.

Moore is a liar...the most dangerous of liars: the kind who tells just enough of the truth to seem plausible.

Moore hates America. So do you, Hank. That's why you are so willing to believe Moore's lies and distortions, because they "confirm" what you already believe.

what are you, an idiot? Operation linebacker was another rolling thunder operation. You are distorting things by implying that this

heavy bomber only shot down a mig. I worked on those birds.

while unloading a acre of HE they encountered a mig sent up to intercept it. The tail guns most likely got it as they were unloading their ordinance. You are a liar and not worth responding to.

Fido, self defense shootings are homicides...police shootings are homicides...the perferred term that your were twisting to avoid is "justifiable homicide"...

...that makes YOU the liar, my little broke dick doggie, and it's plain for anyone to see right here in this thread.

Don't you ever get tired of looking foolish? I suggest you move on before you embarrass yourself further.

You really are stupid, aren't you?

Moore didn't count justifiable homicides in other countries. He counted ALL gun deaths in America.

Why didn't he count all gun deaths in the other countries? That wouldn't have made as much of an emotional impact, would it? That wouldn't have made America look like the raving, gun-totin', shoot-'em-up bunch of violent kooks he wants us to look like, would it?

I say again, and I'll type slow because I know you can't read fast:

Moore is a liar.

And you, my little foul-mouthed putz...I have yet to see anything from you that that proves you don't hate America.

...because you WANT to believe them.

You want to believe America is evil.

That explains your blind, slavering devotion to twisted anti-American liars like Fisk, Chomsky, and Moore.

You believe America-haters?

Then you hate America, too.

If it's so awful here, leave.

And yes, to put it simply so you can understand, "Love it or leave it."

Forget it; I was just venting.

You see, I get a little upset that people who would overthrow our Constitution hide behind the protections it guarantees to spout their garbage.

That's rather hypocritical of them, don't you think?

Still don't get it do you?

Perhaps deliberatley.

Moore is standing in FRONT of the Constitution because he loves this country. Just because he says things you disagree with you are swift to brand him as un American,

I call it speaking truth to power and being a REAL patriot.

Part of being an American is the freedom to call those whom you believe are doing things detremental to this country un-American.

Just because you disagree with someone calling Michael Mooron un-American you are swift to tell that person they are stepping beyond their boundries.

Call those saying Michael Mooron is un-American what you will. I call it speaking truth and being a REAL patriot.
