"Take Back the World! Take Back Our Community!"

Opening Ceremony for the Peace and Social Justice Convergence in Arts in Actions, music, community dialogue, and thearter play "Oiligarchy" by The Liberty Cabbage Theatre Revival, a collectively-run political performance troupe based in Western Massachusetts. "Oiligarchy is a tragic comedy about love, loss and addiction", joked Charlotte Capogna, a member of the troupe, "Our show includes puppetry, poetry and music about petroleum- petroleum history, its alternatives, and its ties to war".

 

What is ActionLA Peace and Social Jsutice Convergence?
ActionLA Peace and Social Justice Convergence is a two week festival including a vast array of cultural-political events throughout the diverse communities of Los Angeles, merging arts, theater, music, film and political action.

Major participate organizations and endorsers include: Sol foundation, Coalition of World Peace, LA CISPES, SEIU local 434B, Pacifica Radio-KPFK Los Angeles, Independent Press Assoication, Z-Magazine, Neighbor for Peace and Justice, ICUJP, FPNN, Global Exchange, Anti-Racists Action-LA, Youth Student Network of Oct 22 Coalition to Stop Police Brutality, Women In Black, Palestine Aid Society, Colombia Peace Project, Xicano Records & Film and more!

SOL Festival is a catalyst for the creation of a world in which all individuals, families, and communities are valued and live in a society where freedom, justice, respect, dignity, peace and sustainable ways of living are its guiding principles. SOL Festival supports local Human Rights movements and re-affirms our solidarity with the peoples of the world.

The diverse program features over forty live music groups headlined by Dezbocado, Visionaries, Odara, Medusa & Feline Science, and Go Betty Go; DJ Charles Feelgood, John Kelley of Moontribe, DJ Icy Ice and What of World Famous Beat Junkies, KKBT & Divine Forces Radio DJs, KPFK. A film festival; an Arts Festival Village with workshops and an art sale; as well as theater and poetry readings . Speakers include Dolores Huerta, Cofounder of United Farm Workers, Assembly member Jackie Goldberg, Luis Rodriguez, author of Always Running, Tyrone Freeman, President of SEIU Local 434-B, and Ernie Zavaleta, CISPES.

6/25 (Wed) 8:00 PM - 12:00 AM, Arts in Action: Peace and Justice Film Festival, featuring latest peace and justice films from across the world, includes:
· Micheal Galinsky's "Horns and Halos" (first 15 mim introduction) which chronicles the efforts of a small press to the GW Bush campaign bio "Fortunate Son" back on bookstore shelves after it was pull by St. Martin Press during 2000 Presidential election.

· "Gaza Strip" by: James Longley, filmed during the first four months of 2001, a period that covers the election of Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon and extends to the first major armed incursion into "Area A" by the Israeli military.
· Jerry Quickly from KPFK will speak his recent tour in Iraq, and show his video footage!
· Several other short film subjects, and anti-war promotional films.
· And music performance by Ancestry of Sound, a Los Angeles-based group consisting of 9 members, with hip-hop, funk, jazz, and spoken word, they strive to break new musical ground while paying homage to our ancestors.

6/28 (Sat) 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM, Arts in Action: Palestine Struggle Night, co-sponsor with Women in Black/Palestine Aid Society, showing of the film "Jenin, Jenin". Following the film there will be a discussion led by Dr. Riad Z. Abelkarim, the physician in Anaheim, California and a founder of Kinder U.S.A., an American nonprofit organization working on behalf of Palestinian children. Dr. Abdelkarim, a UCLA graduate who was born and grew up in Southern California, was arrested by the Israeli Defense Forces while on a medical fact-finding mission to Jenin in the spring of 2002. Presenting "Words. Seeds of Tolerance." An afternoon of celebrating words in all their different forms as they sow seeds of tolerance in our community. Speakers include author Michael Parenti speaking on his book "The Assignation of Julius Caesar," and peace activist Stephen Longfellow
Fiske as well as other community activist poets, spoken word and musical performers. Children's activities including dramatic readings of children's stories including Dr. Suess' 'The Sneetches.'

California: Co-sponsor with Coalition for World Peace, a political/cultural event by one of the leading antiwar/peace groups in Los Angeles. A variety of speakers and performers will put a human face on the war, at home, on the battlefield and around the world. Speakers from countries targeted by the U.S. will tell about their people.
