TORONTO (NFTF.org) -- A move to end violence has been made by the Venezuelan government and opposition leaders (Background Report).

Both parties signed an agreement late last week in an attempt to end demonstrations and labor strikes that have crippled the nation's economy over the past year. In exchange, government officials insist they will push for a mid-term recall vote for President Hugo Chavez after August 19.

A 19-point agreement was made with the guidance of Cesar Gaviria, general secretary of the Organization of American States.

As part of the agreement, the Venezuelan government says it will organize a commission to investigate the deaths of demonstrators.

The agreement was signed by a representative from the Carter Center of former U.S. president Jimmy Carter, and a representative of the United Nations Development Program.
