What was Really in Those Trailers?

Hydrogen gas can be manufactured using a simple process that is entirely consistent with what was found in the trailer factories in Iraq.
The CIA says that hydrogen production is a "plausible cover story" for the mobile production plants recently found in Iraq. However, this "cover" story seems to match exactly what was found, whereas the germ production theory is a bit of a stretch.
Aluminium residue was found in the "fermentation" tank. Also, the CIA says that the vessel was decontaminated with a caustic solution.
However, hydrogen can reasonably be manufactured from aluminium and a sodium hydroxide (caustic) solution (see link for a delightful explanation).
This also explains the "scrubbing" units - they clean, dry and cool the hydrogen produced.
The reaction generates a lot of heat, hence the cooling unit.
The hydrogen would be compressed into gas cylinders, hence the compressor and cylinders.
In contrast, the germ production hypothesis has these problems:
(1) According to the CIA, we are missing the required additional trailer or trailers which must be "equipped for growth media preparation and post-harvest processing and, we would expect, have equipment such as mixing tanks, centrifuges, and spray dryers."
(2) There is no biocontainment system to safeguard the scientists or technicians who worked inside the trailer from exposure to deadly germs.
In other words, it looks a bit like "Oh, here's a stamless steel tank. Such a tank can be used as a fermentation vessel (among many other things). Germ production requires a fermentation vessel. Ergo, a germ factory. Now, where are all the other goodies we need for a germ factory? Umm, errr, well we haven't found the other truck yet; and of course the Iraqi's wouldn't bother to protect their workers..."
Once again the rest of the world is laughing up their sleeves at the US - this really goes from the sublime to the ridiculous.

...want so very badly for this war to have been fought over a lie that you're willing to believe absolutely anything that props up your hope.
Have you tried clicking your heels three times and saying, "There's no WMD...there's no WMD."
Luckily, the war did have a positive side effect...Saddam is out of power. Too bad you guys don't see that as a good thing.

...but guys, we are past the stage where false choices like left-vs-right should be distorting the pursuit of good governance leading to commercial prosperity. In a democracy, that requires that the People, at least to the extent of each individuals intellectual capacity, know what's going on. If someone out there on the web can make a plausible case that each trailer is part of a germ factory, I'd be delighted.

He's absolutely right. We're ready to believe the Australian intelligence officer who resigned in protest, the intelligence leaks in Britain, the reservations of the CIA, the discovery of forged evidence, and of course the complete failure so far to find ANY unconventional weapons (I must admit I'm surprised, I'd thought they must have something lying around). There's all sorts of things we're ready to believe.

http://www.examiner.ie/pport/web/world/Full_Story/did-sg2GdDmLe2ERYsgTbBP-2fa91M.asp "To add to the Government's discomfort, a leading expert on biological weapons cast doubt on the sole evidence discovered by Britain and the US of a weapons programme in Iraq. Mr Blair said that, according to British experts, two trailers fitted with scientific equipment were "almost certainly" part of a fleet of mobile biological weapons laboratories used by the Iraqis to escape detection. However Professor Harry Smith, the chairman of the Royal Society's working group on biological weapons, said he was "pretty sceptical" of the claims. He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that mobile biological weapons facilities have solid sides, unlike those discovered in Iraq. "

Weapons experts finally get it - the trailers make hydrogen
by Marc Pienaar
Saturday, Jun. 07, 2003 at 6:38 AM
marcpienaar@hotmail.com
...and they can't make germs. The tank on the trailer is a reaction vessel, not a fermenter. All the other equipment on the trailer is not needed for germ manufacture. "The skeptical experts said the mobile plants lacked gear for steam sterilization, normally a prerequisite for any kind of biological production, peaceful or otherwise. Its lack of availability between production runs would threaten to let in germ contaminants, resulting in failed weapons. Second, if this shortcoming were somehow circumvented, each unit would still produce only a relatively small amount of germ-laden liquid, which would have to undergo further processing at some other place to make it concentrated and ready for use as a weapon. Finally, they said, the trailers have no easy way for technicians to remove germ fluids from the processing tank." Then this would be hysterically funny, if it wasn't so serious: "Intelligence officials in Washington rebutted the skeptics, saying, for instance, that the Iraqis might have obtained the needed steam for sterilization from a separate supply truck." What's that - "Anonymous inteligence officials contradict senior weapons experts on a technically obvious weapons issue"? http://www.marinij.com/Stories/0,1413,234~24410~1441533,00.html Did the Pentagon/CIA make a mistake, or is this just the latest and most extreme version of the big front -page lie (Bush's "we found the weapons - we found mobile germ factories", televised world wide from the G8 conference), followed later by a page 5 "doubts have been raised"? I posted the "trailers make hydrogen" article here after 10 minutes of Google search on what the CIA said they found on the trailers. It's very hard to believe they didn't know, and/or didn't brief Bush, because this leaves the administration in interesting times, or would, if the news media were news media. http://www.marinij.com/Stories/0,1413,234~24410~1441533,00.html

...out of the water:
If the Bush Administration knew the WMD justification for the war was a lie, we WOULD have found them there...they would have been planted, just as the Left so breathlessly predicted.
So: No WMD found = Bush thought there were WMD = Bush didn't lie.
Spin that, lefties.

Brits sold mobile hydrogen factory to Iraq

http://politics.guardian.co.uk/foreignaffairs/story/0,11538,973196,00.html For those who have been asking me on earth anyone would want a mobile hydrogen generator for, plus other breaking info... "Artillery balloons are essentially balloons that are sent up into the atmosphere and relay information on wind direction and speed allowing more accurate artillery fire. Crucially, these systems need to be mobile. The Observer has discovered that not only did the Iraq military have such a system at one time, but that it was actually sold to them by the British. In 1987 Marconi, now known as AMS, sold the Iraqi army an Artillery Meteorological System or Amets for short. "

Never fear ...the worse your reaction to the candidate the less likely he can win over swing voters therefoe the bigger the margin at the election (I dont think their winning is an option but if they pick the right candidate they might be able to avoid humiliation)
They would only have a chance (of not being humiliated) if they had the tony blair kind of a leftist party leader who really wants to bring his party right and is strong on defense etc etc
