Well, for one, Google has now banned Indy from their search engines. Keep up your policy of "open publishing" and soon all the other search engines will ban you as well.

I don't want Indy to be in total isolation from the rest of the web community... why not clean up the newswire. I'm tired of the infantile anarchist playground politics that say doing so is "censorship" and "against free speech."

The whole point of Indy is to allow activists and independent thinkers a place to interact with others. If you allow your enemies to undermine you by allowing ANYTHING to be posted... then slowly you will be isolated and cut off from those who should know about and use the platform. The fact that Google has banned Indy points to this... and it is only the beginning.

Google News has confirmed they have removed Indymedia from their list of news sources. Google bowed to pressure brought upon them by an email campaign organized by people who disagree with some of what gets posted under IndyMedia's policy of allowing anyone to post to the newswire, and not exerting editorial control.

People are claiming IndyMedia is "anti-semitic", because of trolls who sometimes post hateful posts on the unedited, user-supplied newswire.

I wonder how that ever happened. If it happened. There's always AltaVista and a group of other engines. Screw em.

For instance, type "Zionazi" into Google search. The first two hits are IndyMedia.

However, IM is not a news souce searched by Google News. There are a couple "news" stories there still, but they will filter out as time goes by.

And that's as it should be. IM has no editorial policy, no managing editor...it's a BBS, that's all. Most "news" stories are C&Ped from other sources...not all of which are legitmate news outlets themselves.

You know, disguising hate as a political freedom is beyond me in a class of people that speak of justice for indigenous peoples and human rights. I used to like Indeymedia, then i got offended. i talked to the editors, and got no response. I wouldn't tell google to do that, but really, the last post about Jews just proves the point. Racism is just as much a problem for progressives as it is for everyone else. I won't give up on Indeymedia, and I'd probably send a letter to google asking for repreive on the grounds that the Idea behind free speech is valid. However, if racists want to post, why don't they find their own Nazi site. It's not just anti Jew hate I read here, it's "kill the niggers and arabs," as well. It has to be stopped. The editors have every right to ensure that we can be free of hate speech. Otherwise, we can just all post on Kobe and have it out over there because here will be just as bad.

Amazingly enough... the volunteers who run Indymedia will not protect themselves (and us!) by blocking the pornographic, racist, and Jew bashing posts... on the grounds that such action would be against "free speech."

That's terrific. The result is that the mainstream is beginning to cut off links to Indy. Google is the first but it won't be the last. Will Indy be happy when all major search engines ban Indymedia from their data banks?
