TORONTO (NFTF.org) -- Sheik Mohammed Al Fartusi, a leading Shiite cleric, was arrested yesterday by U.S. forces in Najaf, according to Arab TV network Al Jazeera.

Leading Shiites in Najaf, Karbala and Baghdad have vowed to hold the largest demonstration Iraq has ever seen to demand for the U.S. to release the cleric. Iraqis are charging that the U.S. is quietly beginning to eliminate any rivals or political opposition to the man they will soon appoint to run Iraq.

The U.S. government has not yet commented on this incident.
