The Saddleback College chapter of Students for Progress and
Development in Iran (SPDI) was established in Spring 2003. Its
objectives include: Increasing the awareness of Iranian issues,
providing a forum for discussion of related topics, and finding ways
to channel the voice of Iranian-Americans within the United States'
political sphere. To achieve these goals, SPDI has organized The
Iranian Awareness Week here at Saddleb! ack College, during the week
of Monday, April 14th through Thursday, April 17th from 12-1:30pm and
During this four-day event, SPDI will host distinguished academic and
non-academic speakers, who will address issues such as: Iranian-U.S.
relations, women in Iran, Iranian art and the 2002 INS Registration
The United States is actively confronting two out of the three
nations on the "axis of evil," described in President Bush's State of
the Union address. With the United States now engaged in a conflict
with Iraq and in a diplomatic confrontation with North Korea, many
analysts see Iran as being the next logical target.
It is in these uncertain times that the importance and value of
education and political discourse become apparent. SPDI hopes that
The Iranian Awareness Week will serve to inform the public about a
country now engulfed in turmoil and a rather ambiguous future.
