German Artist Rudolf Schlichter had already been forbidden to show or exhibit his works by the Nazi regime when he created this Painting.

Schlichter's vision of war was not shown in public until after WWII. The Artist made use of Nazi propaganda ideals in his Painting... the "strong" warrior, the worker carrying tools to build a new civilization, but he turned those symbols on their head. The strong warrior was blinded by it's power and about to walk off a cliff to it's doom. Demons straight out of medieval German lore clutched at the warrior's chest, eating him alive. In
the background all the accomplishments of civilization were burning to the ground.
