On Friday, March 22nd the Los ANgeles rally that started as another tense stand off between police and protesters at the Westwood Federal Building morphed into an impromptu march. Unable to march down Wilshire, a handful of protesters at the Westwood Federal building meandered to Sepulveda. Intermittently crossing the street with signs, the crowd provoked car horns and peace signs from the surrounding traffic. After about ten minutes, the rest of the rally arrived marching down cordoned off Wilshire. As the protesters regrouped into a larger force, the demonstrators "took" Sepulveda and headed south among a sea of traffic. The group split at one point and the cops, taken by surprise stumbled to guess the our next move. Regrouping on Santa Monica blvd, swarms of police arrived, six helicopters hovered, and the police contained about two-thirds of the group for about an hour as tensions rose. Eventually, after shutting down Santa Monica and adding onlookers to the group of peace marchers, an additional hoard of cops on bikes, motorcycles, and cars stood blocked us from moving beyond our position on the sidewalk. THe extremely tense stand off ended with the cops allowing us to disperse with the officers surrounding us from all sides. This is where we lost the group... for more info and great pix check out the photos of HEidi W.
