Target the Academy Awards?

by Avid Movie Goer Saturday, Mar. 22, 2003 at 4:32 AM

Strategy to disrupt the Oscars.

What do you think about targeting the Academy Awards this weekend? The shitty movies this year should make it a pretty popular hit. We could perhaps block traffic on various streets leading to the event. Maybe we won't manage to shut it down but we could disrupt it. Just stay far enough away so that they will not know where to post police.

That sounds like a pretty good plan actually. There'll definitely be arrests. Ok, I really pay no attention, so what day and time are the academy awards, I'd make the trek from San Bernardino to get in on this maybe.

focus on censorship and blacklist

by ziggy Saturday, Mar. 22, 2003 at 5:50 AM

The last I heard, the powers that be are still planning to yank the microphone from any actor that speaks out excessively against the war during the awards, and that there still remains a blacklist of speakers that will not get the podium (Martin Sheen, Michael Moore and others).

If half of the people bring signs that focus on this issue, it will be hard for the party-goers and the media to block it out, which might create some open space in the media for debate about the fact that a blacklist even exists (most Americans don't know about it). Mixing in this focus with direct mention of the war on Iraq is a good blend.

That sounds like an excellent plan man.

LAPD should be able to round up enough of the knucklehead protesters between now and Sunday, then the only protesters left will be the ones inside. Spray some pepper spray inside and that will finish off the rest stampeding for the doors!

fascists tuning into the imc?

ya'll so proud of beating up teenagers, like the ones you

molested on Feb. 15th, and the kid you beat up in front of

amoeba records, right?

mellow out pigs. your dicks wont shrink if you don't use

excessive force.

support peace at academy awards

by eeyore Saturday, Mar. 22, 2003 at 7:30 AM

many people have spent the past several weeks planning a rally at the academy awards to support the pro-peace actors who've made their views known. please don't piss on their parade.

i, like the rest of you, will be putting my ass on the line all weekend and will probably end up getting arrested. i truly believe we have to bring san francisco's highly successful tactics here and shut down as much as possible--just not at the academy awards where a lot of people have put in a lot of time to support the actors that support our cause.

Even if the event could be shut down (I wasn't suggesting that) that wouldn't likely be as powerful as supporting the actors, as well as getting a message through. It's an unusual situation and opportunity.

Oscar disruption

by Hollywood sucks Saturday, Mar. 22, 2003 at 8:50 AM

The meeting spot to disrupt the Oscars is Sunset at Orange (one block west of Highland) this Sunday at 3:30. I'll personally be there. I find it appaling that the Oscars would take place at this time.

shutting it down

by monkey Saturday, Mar. 22, 2003 at 8:53 AM

sure, it would be nice to support those in the industry that want to speak out, but those people are being made silent at the oscars.

remember, the academy awards is one of the most watched television programs in the world, with over 1 BILLION viewers. shutting it down or causing a disruprion of some kind would most certainly send a message that not all americans support imperialist policy.

in a way, the disrupting the Oscars could be one of the most threatening things we could do. Hollywood and the Oscars are right in the center of the sick historical psychosis that distorts and paralyzes our culture. at the same time these sick ceremonies and celebrations of fakeness and insincerity are among our most loved national rituals. i wouldn't be surprised if the state instinctively feels the sanctity of the Academy awards and assigns five times as many cops to prvent a disruption at the Academy Awards than at the federal building.

this is our CULTURE, after all.
