When Country Western singers start taking heat for opposing Bush... you know we're in trouble.
chicks.jpg, image/jpeg, 410x314
The Dixie Chicks (L-R) Emily Robinson, Natalie Maines and Marti Seidel, are finding out that criticizing President George W. Bush's plans for war in Iraq can cost you air play.
Country stations across the U.S. have pulled the Chicks from playlists following reports that lead singer Maines said in a concert in London earlier this week that she was 'ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.'
Station managers said their decisions were prompted by calls from irate listeners who thought criticism of Bush was unpatriotic.

How can criticism of an unelected, partisan-appointed pResident be unpatriotic?
Bush is the most patriotic Amerikan of all:
In a news conference on 11 October 2001, President George W. Bush said "we learned some very important lessons in Vietnam." All members of the U.S. armed forces should take a moment and familiarize themselves with the important lessons that George Bush learned during the Vietnam War. Since war in Iraq is inevitable, let’s do everything we can to encourage the men and women of the U.S. armed services to follow the example of their Commander-in-Chief when called upon to go into battle.
In May 1968, American soldiers were dying in combat in Southeast Asia at a rate of about 350 per week. George W. Bush was twelve days away from losing his student draft deferment (meaning that he’d be eligible for draft into the Vietnam War) when he abruptly decided that he should join the 147th Fighter Group of the Texas Air National Guard. In spite of the very long waiting list and having only scored the lowest acceptable grade on the pilot aptitude qualification test, this son of a Houston-based congressman managed to enlist on the same day that he applied, and a special ceremony was staged so he could be photographed swearing in for duty (a second special photo opportunity was arranged when Bush was commissioned a second lieutenant as Bush’s father the congressman [a supporter of the Vietnam War] stood proudly in the background). According to Shrub’s former commanding officer, Bush “said he wanted to fly just like his daddy.” Other members of the Texas Air National Guard at the time included the aide to the speaker of the Texas House and at least seven members of the Dallas Cowboys professional football team; Bush’s 147th Fighter Group was known as the "Champagne Unit" because it also included the sons of future Senator Lloyd Bentsen and Texas Governor John Connally.
Immediately following his promotion to second lieutenant, Bush was put on inactive duty status and spent more than two months in Florida working for Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, Edward J. Gurney. When he wasn’t handing out Gurney press releases and making sure that the reporters didn’t oversleep, Bush returned to Houston for weekend Guard duty. In early 1970, Bush rented a one-bedroom apartment at the exclusive Chateaux Dijon complex in Houston, a building with six swimming pools where Bush played all-day water volleyball games and dated many of the single women who lived there.
In 1973, as Bush’s daddy was being considered for a new job as chairman of Nixon’s Republican National Committee, Dubya secured an early release from the National Guard to start at Harvard Business School, eight months short of his full six-year hitch, and transferred to a reserve unit in Boston for the rest of his time. “One of my first recollections of him,” says classmate Marty Kahn, “was sitting in class and hearing the unmistakable sound of someone spitting tobacco. I turned around and there was George sitting in the back of the room in his [National Guard] bomber jacket spitting in a cup.” Bush’s acceptance into Harvard Business School surprised some, since he had graduated from Yale a full five years before.
Urge enlisted men and women to do like Bush did: avoid combat at all costs, hang out, sleep late, and lead an active social life; when called upon to fight a war for your great nation, see if you can to pull political strings in order to avoid the infantry and chose instead to spend two years in flight training in San Antonio and another four years in part-time service in your home state. If you lack the ruling-class connections, than you should be obliged to do whatever you can to follow the lead of your Commander-in-Chief: cheat, lie, malinger, and go AWOL. Desert while you can; killing and dying for ruling-class petrocrats is for chumps.

Statement from Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks March 14, 2003 "As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect. We are currently in Europe and witnessing a huge anti-American sentiment as a result of the perceived rush to war. While war may remain a viable option, as a mother, I just want to see every possible alternative exhausted before children and American soldiers' lives are lost. I love my country. I am a proud American." http://dixiechicks.launch.yahoo.com/news.asp?id=26

First fallacy of logic: Begging the question. --the views are wrong under the assumption that Bush is above critisizm. Establishes the fact that is is not good to question the President. Second fallacy of logic: Appeal to Authority Just because the "dickhead chicks" are poplular and making alot of money does'nt make them experts or worthy critics of the president. To put it bluntly. ...and am certainly no fan of the bush administration or its brown-shirt mafia trying to tell people what to think.
However.
For a group of entertainers to pander to the public opinion of their audience by trashing our government, at this, quite possibly our most desperate hour ever.... disgusting. If they want to get their point across they could have thanked the people for their support and encouraged them to establish a clear distinction between the people that speak for america and the people of america.
To just jump on the international soap box and scream 'oh yeah, bush is a meanie' to see if it will get you some applause does not present much of a unified front, no does it accomplish jackshit. And even if we aren't unified on this, there's little to be gained regardless of what side you're on by whining about it to foriegn nationals. At a rock concert no less.
They should have just shut the hell up and sang their stupid little songs imo.
Here's to hoping the protests have some effect... good luck everyone.

The Dixie Chicks are paid to entertain us with their songs, not their lame political views. The statemade was for the benefit of a european audiance, maybe so they could sell more records. When and if the come back to play in Texas they will get the same welcome that other entertainers have recieved. Boos and rude finger signs.

Young female country western singers weigh in on U.S. Foreign Policy.
They're about as qualified to comment on these matters as other dipshit entertainers like Martin Sheen.
I'm happy to have them discrediting themselves, and to see country western stations across America boycotting their music.

"As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such a twilight that we all must be most aware of change in the air– however slight– lest we become the unwitting victims of the darkness."– WILLIAM O. DOUGLAS (Supreme Court Justice 1939-75)
So, you guys are actually advocating that certain groups of people should lose their right to free speech. Used to be Blacks, Jews and Mexicans, etc., and now you've started to focus on Arabs, intellectuals and entertainers again.
I say AGAIN because this is very reminiscent of 1930's Germany, which was also driven by both right-wing Christain and patriotic fervor. Can you people truly stand in the presense of God and say that you are not supporting blatant evil by using brownshirt tactics to cower and shut up certain groups of people.
You forget that your actions are recorded forever and there will be a day of reckoning and so-called right wing actions won't have the benefit of Big-Money owned news services and money and deception to hide the Truth. Or are you so strongly deluded that you really think you are doing good...

Everyone's entitled to speak their mind.
However, when you buy a ticket to a music show, you're usually not expecting a political message.
I once attended a Peter, Paul, and Mary concert in an outdoor theater. The tickets were pricey because we were in the third row front and center. The music was great.
However, it really turned me off when they stopped singing and started talking about what a fine guy Bill Clinton was and how Ken Starr and his boys were evil reincarnated. They had the microphone and they had my money. I would have liked for them to hand over both. I didn't want to pay to hear someone extoll the virtues of our worst ever President, nor did I want to pay to hear a fine man like Kennet Starr being pilloried.

Like all American citizens, the Dixie Chicks have the right to free speech. As long as they're not divulging national security secrets, they can say whatever they like to a London crowd.
However, free speech does not mean that there are no consequences to what you say. The American people are outraged by what the Dixie Chicks said, and that is our right. We can speak, wright, email, and telephone country music stations demanding a boycott and that is also our right.
Free speech means that the GOVERNMENT cannot jail you for your remarks. I don't see the Dixie Chicks languishing in prison, so I don't think free speech is the issue here is it?

I think that those of you who condemned the Dixie Chicks after they exercised their right to freedom of speech by denouncing the President of the United States should be ashamed of yoursleves. Does not condemnation of free speech go against one of the most intrinsic freedoms this country was founded on? Is it not every American's and every non-American's right to pubically state their opinion about US foreign policy? Good for the Dixie Chicks. Good for them to use their celebrity to protest this war. Shame on you for forgetting why you're an American - which, may I remind you, is because our forefathers fought against tyranny and oppression, NOT because they were infantile (i.e. French-bashing, which I consider rude and just plain embarassing) war-mongers who put brawn before brains. Here comes the big FBI?CIA red flag - Although I am an American and I love having been born in the US, I am ashamed of President Bush, his foreign policy, and I think he is a complete idiot. This country has jumped on a bandwagon that is driven by a blind, crazy fool who is completely unaware of the brick wall looming not far off in the distance. I went abroad this past summer and you should have heard what Europeans/Middles Easterners thought of the Prez then... just wait. Good for the Dixie Chicks for telling people to jump off the banwagon before it crashes. If you all want to stay on and remain ignorant of the terrible crash ahead, that's fine, but please do not boo those of us who are smart enough to get off. The Dixie Chicks like other entertainers have an unfair advantage over the common person. They are usage a form to express their personal views to a mass media that some of a non celebrity status does not have. But such is life, Their biggest offense is they stood on a stage that was intended for singing, not for personal political views. The Hollywood stars made their statements away from the area that they normal perform in.
Their greatest offense is that they chose to verbal abuse the President of the United States of America while in another country, this was a cowardly act. Their alienated fans will let them know how they felt about it when the Dixie Chicks get back to the states.
Free speech is alive and well in the USA, but try doing it with some level of dignity if you want respect.

No offense. The Dixie chicks had to work hard to see it from the American perspective while abroad. That's because there's a big rift between the mood in the US, and popular sentiment abroad. In other words, she felt under siege by the simple fact that US policies were endagering her. So she defended herself--in her own mind I would say--by disassociating herself from the president, even as a Texan.
So the Prez is putting people in danger abroad, and you want 'dignity'? Dignity is not required for free speech. Fuck your dignity I have the right to talk. You understand? Otherwise there is no free speech.
260,000 people might die in a week. What do you not understand? Saddam has never killed that many in his own country, nor would he have foreseeably in the future.
Just my humble opinion.

If you want to make a public joke out of your personal life, talk to everyone about your personal problems. If you want to make a public joke out of your homeland, use your position and influence as a high profile representative of the United States by publicly ridiculing your presidents' policies. Everyone in the world knows that how to deal with Saddam is the biggest controversy on the planet right now, -You have to be a true airhead to be in a foreign country, performing as an entertainer in public, and to think that you can just air out your opinion that your president is fucked up without thinking that there are going to be some serious ripples for somebody. Now people say that its' really bad when you can't ridicule the president... -common sense says to me that if Natalie Maines had even a lick of common sense she would have kept her chubby cheeks busy promoting her music, rather than showing the world that before you voice your opinion, you need to need to make sure that you'll be able to stand behind it if other people don't agree with you. Our president does that every day, -over far bigger issues than the few little thoughts and concerns that manage to flutter out from Natalies blonde little brain. -Natalie, to put it in terms your hillbilly little brain can fathom, It's kind of like going over to the neighbor's house and telling them that your dad and mom are cousins and you kiss your brother Earls' meat puppet goodnight every evening. How did he get into power? Rallying around a catalyzing, catastrophic event of mysterious, unresolved origin? Reichstag fire of 1933? Sound like 9/11? The same that was investigated and put to bed by HENRY FUCKING KISSENGER for christs sake.
How about how he escalated his power to untold limits? Revoking his peoples civil liberties the day after that reichstag fire? Kinda like the "PATRIOT" act?
How about making sure the natives didn't say shit about anything? Establish a threat, attack anyone opposed to attacking that threat as not-patriotic and cowardly? Disappear them? Yeah welcome to ashcroft nation bitch?
What about the invasion? How did that get started? Did hitler ever invade a nation just to take over? HAHA. No. Every single time he was 'defending his nation'. And look where that shit got them.
I'd say, "wake the fuck up you zombie idiot asshole", but you know whats up. You're just trying to push this shit through cause you think its good for the nation. You're wrong. You're just too damn stupid to see farther than a week and a half in front of your face.

Let’s take a quick comparison:
Nazi Germany: A first world country with major heavy manufacturing. One of the largest Arms manufacturing bases on the planet at it’s time.
Iraq: Virtually no manufacturing. All weapons must be purchased from other nations e.g., the U.S.A. which provided ALL of his BioWeapons from American Type Culture Corporation.
Saddam Hussein is many things and most of them vile and repugnant, but he bears no realistic comparison to Hitler. He is a common street thug in charge of a nation. Much like many of the 3rd World tinpot despots the U.S. Government has trained, supplied, and supported. The only difference between Saddam and any of the other little despots our government has helped put in power is Oil and the Geostrategic position of Iraq.
P.S.: You’re still a boob.

Of all of the possible reasons that many people claim to have to dislike Bush... why Texas? I find it interesting that the statement made was repeated in a post concert interview and then of course retracted after the Chicks saw that their sales and reputions had taken a steep dive in the south. Its funny how people react when you take away their money. To little to late!! After a comment bashing another state (that likes your particular genre I might add) in your own country said in front of thousands of Europeans, they deserve to have their music removed from the air and their CD's destroyed by irate fans. Its the least we can do. I could really care less about the fact that President Bush was on the recieving end of this comment. He is a polititan and there are always people that dissagree with polititians, but when a comment is made degrating American soil by an American citizen your going to get what you deserve...NOTHING. To the absolute moron who trashed the commander in chief for "draft dodging" during Vietnam...Have you ever served in combat. I really doubt that you have, and I also doubt that you have any room to trash anybody, much less somebody who was elected, maybe not by popular majority, but by the rules set forth in the constitution, that by the way were never challenged until the election of 2000 when some out of line liberals went just a couple steps too far after losing a very well-run race for the presidency. Up until the court proceedings following Gore's loss, I felt the Vice President ran a respectable race, but once he was ultimately forced by left-wing liberals to contest the constitution all of that respect quickly faded. If you lose, you don't complain about the rules, you accept it and congratulate your defeator. Anyways, I also feel it is severely out of line to trash the President of the United States, and the Commander in Chief of the US Armed Forces for getting into the Texas Air National Guard because of who his daddy is. Maybe he did, but the fact of the matter is that he did graduate from Yale University with exemplary marks (only a single mark below a B) a feat which I feel you have no room to criticize. He did get into Harvard Business School, and did so because of the marks he earned at Yale University, as well as his other activities, among them his participation in the Texas Air National Guard. Yes, you are correct that he was released early from his commitment to the Armed Forces, but this was done to promote his education, one that has served him extremely well based on the integrity and logical sense in which he has continued to run this country during a phase that President Clinton put on the back burner and avoided for 8 years. People praise Clinton and trash George W. because of the economic condition of the country while they have been in office. What these ignorant fools do not realize is that the economic condition of the nation lies in the hands of Alan Greenspan, not the President. Furthermore, those with the anti-war stance can pucker up and kiss my ass. Lets go back to 1775 and see how far your "free speech" would have gotten you. The answer is nowhere, at least until that right was granted, ironically because of war, in 1776. The great nations of the world have maintained that greatness because of the fairness they promote through different methods, the last resort being warfare. I feel that anti-war protestors are misconstruing right from wrong, and are illogically placing blame on President Bush because they are not educated on the subject, but stand up simply for the sake of standing up. They do not realize that to every educated person out there they sound like naive idiots. If I were called to war and asked to serve and possibly die for my country I would. I would die for me, I would die for the President, I would die for my parents who appropriately taught me the difference between right and wrong, I would die for you, and I would die for all the cowards who wouldn't. The ruin of this great nation will be you ignorant fools who believe that prolonging this inevitable war any longer is the answer. I can understand why people protested Vietnam as the Vietnam were a mere threat, but had not attacked us yet. However Iraq has harbored and encouraged those responsible for the September 11, 2001 attack that I feel many of you have forgotten. I feel that many of you anti-war protestors need to wake up and realize that Iraq has had 12 years to disarm and comply with the regulations the rest of the world has chosen to abide by (exception...North Korea) and to stand up for what is right, not just stand up for the sake of standing up.

Their comments were not only unpatriotic, but un-American. Because they have a public following due to their ability to sing songs, they should never degrade and condemn their own president, especially in a time of impending war. Obviously, freedom of speach is their constitional right, but allegence to their own country during these trying times undoubtedly supersedes any opinion they may have or want to publically declare. Shame on them. They not only need to issue a "sincere" public apology, but add the message that all Hollywood left-wing extremists should demonstrate their patriotism by silence rather than anti-sematic psychobabble bringing shame to themselves and this great nation as a whole. I encourage all "true and patriotic" Americans to boycott their songs of shame and forever decline to listen to any musical or otherwise unpatriotic messages they may attempt to convey to the American public. Shame on them. "Dixi Who?"

Poor Natalie. She should understand the ONLY thing she does well is sing. Her expertise in diplomacy and foreign relations are not nearly as well regarded. Perhaps she should just keep her silly mouth shut until she's singing. I don't consider her unpatriotic at all--just disrespectful. Now, instead of "Earl", it's "Goodbye, Girl".

I watched local news last night and there were plenty of ads. I don't know about CNN or Faux news because I don't have cable. I suppose everyone knows who the head of the FCC is? Michael Powell, son of Colin Powell. It's interesting that we only have a couple of major media conglomerates and they're war whores.

you have people claiming they support free speech then in the next sentence they claim "maines shouldn't have said that"
thats hypocrisy right there! but they don't even realize it and still believe they are right
the people who died in the world trade center were just as innocent as the Kurds in Halabja who were gassed by Saddam. The US should not have supported Saddam by giving him WMD. the blood of the 5,000 kurds are on americas hands

In regards to the comments made by Natalie Maines:
While yes, this is America and yes, we do guarantee the right to free speech (though Britain does not, so perhaps London was not the most appropriate venue--Just ask the reporter who sits in jail for asserting the rights of fox hunters: "Fox hunters deserve the same rights as blacks or homosexuals.") However, as Maines maintains the right to say what she will, consumers likewise have the right to not buy her CD's. It is not a new "McCarthyism," because the Dixie Chicks feel financial repercussions for their actions, it is merely consumers asserting their right to not listen to a brand of music with which they disagree. In admiring a celebrity, one buys the whole package: a "look," a sound, or, in this case, an ideology. The question is not whether the Dixie Chicks have a right to their opinion--that is a given. The question is, do we as consumers still have to listen to a group that offends our better sensibilities.
That answer to that, of course, is no.

Lets see so far on this board i have read that the war is all about oil, power, land, and american imperialism... This is outrageous when in fact the war is not about any of those things first and formost its about removing a potential threat because he is the leader of a terriorist harboring country. Lets not forget to mention that over 4,000 Iraqi children die each month because this idiot builds weapons instead of tradeing for food for his people. His sons rape for sport and drive Royals Royces' while beggers on the street are murdered or put in torture chambers for gathering to praise God. See i saw an interview where this freelance reporter this "whats the war about?" and most replied its about OIL! Then he asked "Then why didnt we just keep all the oild after the first gulf war if wanted it and wanted control over it"?? ALL OF THEM GAVE THE SAME LIBERAL ANSWER.... "ummm i dunno" You think we want to go to war?? You think bush wants this? NO we have been asking saddam to disarm of 12 years how long must we wait? What would be a good amount of time to give someone to hadn over there weapons and destroy them?? 12 years i think would be more than long enough! As far as maines comments do i agree with her? NO but do i stand up and defend her right to say whatever she wants? YES YES YES.... Every American has the right to say whatever they want thats whats makes this country great. But for there own good i wish they wouldnt have said that cause now there rec sales will plummet and there spins on the radio are almost all gone. They will soon fade into the dark and no one will listen. Liberals play polotics just like all these democrats includeing the "wonderful" clinton who are against this war were not against Clinton bombing iraq for 5 straight days and clinton even said how we mut remove saddam form power. And he didnt even TRY the UN.. Where are they now? looking like fools by flip flopping there opinions on everything to appease there followers instead of standing up for wahts right like some demos have done.... He has abused the power he stole, done much to ruin a great country, committed horrendous crimes against humanity, failed to honor his oath to uphold the Constitution. And for what? The document mentioned was written in Sept of 2000 had been widely endorsed by the names on their statement of principles page, which reads like a who's who of current American federal politics. Consider that carefully next time they try to tell you what to think, who to like, who not to like, and what it means to be a 'good patriotic American'.

Who's Smarter? by Cindy Osborne
The Hollywood group is at it again. Holding anti-war rallies, screaming about the Bush Administration, running ads in major newspapers, defaming the President and his Cabinet every chance they get, to anyone and everyone who will listen. They publicly defile them and call them names like"stupid", "morons", and "idiots". Jessica Lange went so far as to tell a crowd in Spain that she hates President Bush and is embarrassed to be an American.
So, just how ignorant are these people who are running the country? Let's look at the biographies of these "stupid", "ignorant", "moronic" leaders, and then at the celebrities who are castigating them:
President George W. Bush Received a Bachelors Degree from Yale University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He served as an F-102 pilot for the Texas Air National Guard. He began his career in the oil and gas business in Midland in 1975 and worked in the energy industry until 1986. He was elected Governor on November 8, 1994, with 53.5 percent of the vote. In a historic re-election victory, he became the first Texas Governor to be elected to consecutive four-year terms on November 3, 1998 winning 68.6 percent of the vote. In 1998 Governor Bush won 49 percent of the Hispanic vote, 27 percent of the African-American vote, 27 percent of Democrats and 65 percent of women. He won more Texas counties, 240 of 254, than any modern Republican other that Richard Nixon in 1972 and is the first Republican gubernatorial candidate to win the heavily Hispanic and Democratic border counties of El Paso, Cameron and Hidalgo. (Someone began circulating a false story about his I.Q. being lower than any other President. If you believed it, you might want to go to Urban Legends.Com and see the truth.)
Vice President Dick Cheney Earned a B.A. in 1965 and a M.A. in 1966, both in political science. Two years later, he won an American Political Science Association congressional fellowship. One of Vice President Cheney's primary duties is to share with individuals, members of Congress and foreign leaders, President Bush's vision to strengthen our economy, secure our homeland and win the War on Terrorism. In his official role as President of the Senate, Vice President Cheney regularly goes to Capital Hill to meet with Senators and members of the House of Representatives to work on the Administration's legislative goals. In his travels as Vice President, he has seen first hand the great demands the war on terrorism is placing on the men and women of our military, and he is proud of the tremendous job they are doing for the United States of America.
Secretary of State Colin Powell Educated in the New York City public schools, graduating from the City College of New York (CCNY), where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in geology. He also participated in ROTC at CCNY and received a commission as an Army second lieutenant upon graduation in June 1958. His further academic achievements include a Master of Business Administration Degree from George Washington University. Secretary Powell is the recipient of numerous U.S. and foreign military awards and decorations. Secretary Powell's civilian awards include two Presidential Medals of Freedom, the President's Citizens Medal, the Congressional Gold Medal, the Secretary of State Distinguished Service Medal, and the Secretary of Energy Distinguished Service Medal. Several schools and other institutions have been named in his honor and he holds honorary degrees from universities and colleges across the country.
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld Attended Princeton University on Scholarship (AB, 1954) and served in the U.S. Navy (1954-57) as a Naval aviator. Congressional Assistant to Rep. Robert Griffin (R-MI), 1957-59; U.S. Representative, Illinois, 1962-69; Assistant to the President, Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity, Director of the Cost of Living Council, 1969-74; U.S. Ambassador to NATO, 1973-74; head of Presidential Transition Team, 1974; Assistant to the President, Director of White House Office of Operations, White House Chief of Staff, 1974-77; Secretary of Defense, 1975-77
Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge Raised in a working class family in veterans' public housing in Erie. He earned a scholarship to Harvard, graduating with honors in 1967. After his first year at The Dickinson School of Law, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as an infantry staff sergeant in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star for Valor. After returning to Pennsylvania, he earned his Law Degree and was in private practice before becoming Assistant District Attorney in Erie County. He was elected to Congress in 1982. He was the first enlisted Vietnam combat veteran elected to the U.S. House, and was overwhelmingly re-elected six times.
National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice Earned her Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Denver in 1974; her Master's from the University of Notre Dame in 1975; and her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver in 1981. (Note: Rice enrolled at the University of Denver at the age of 15, graduating at 19 with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science (Cum Laude). She earned a Master's Degree at the University of Notre Dame and a Doctorate from the University of Denver's Graduate School of International Studies. Both of her advanced degrees are also in Political Science.)
She is a Fellow of the AmericanAcademy of Arts and Sciences and has been awarded Honorary Doctorates from Morehouse College in 1991, the University of Alabama in 1994, and the University of Notre Dame in 1995. At Stanford, she has been a member of the Center for International Security and Arms Control, a Senior Fellow of the Institute for International Studies, and a Fellow (by courtesy) of the Hoover Institution.
Her books include Germany Unified and Europe Transformed (1995) with Philip Zelikow, The Gorbachev Era (1986) with Alexander Dallin, and Uncertain Allegiance: The Soviet Union and the Czechoslovak Army (1984). She also has written numerous articles on Soviet and East European foreign and defense policy, and has addressed audiences in settings ranging from the U.S. Ambassador's Residence in Moscow to the Commonwealth Club to the 1992 and 2000 Republican National Conventions. From 1989 through March 1991, the period of German reunification and the final days of the Soviet Union, she served in the Bush Administration as Director, and then Senior Director, of Soviet and East European Affairs in the National Security Council, and a Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs.
In 1986, while an international affairs fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations, she served as Special Assistant to the Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 1997, she served on the Federal Advisory Committee on Gender -- Integrated Training in the Military. She was a member of the boards of directors for the Chevron Corporation, the Charles Schwab Corporation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the University of Notre Dame, the International Advisory Council of J.P. Morgan and the San Francisco Symphony Board of Governors. She was a Founding Board member of the Center for a New Generation, an educational support fund for schools in East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park, California and was Vice President of the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula.
In addition, her past board service has encompassed such organizations as Transamerica Corporation, Hewlett Packard, the Carnegie Corporation, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, The Rand Corporation, the National Council for Soviet and East European Studies, the Mid-Peninsula Urban Coalition and KQED, public broadcasting for San Francisco. Born November 14, 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama, she earned her bachelor's degree in political science, cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Denver in 1974; her Master's from the University of Notre Dame in 1975; and her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver in 1981. She resides in Washington, D.C.
So, who are these pompous, outspoken celebrity critics? What is their education? What is their experience in affairs of State or in National Security? While I will defend to the death their right to express their opinions, I think that if they are going to call into question the intelligence of our leaders, we should also have all the facts on their education and background:
Barbra Streisand Completed high school Career: Singing and acting
Cher Dropped out of school in 9th grade. Career: Singing and acting
Martin Sheen Flunked exam to enter University of Dayton. Career: Acting
Jessica Lange Dropped out college mid-freshman year. Career: Acting
Alec Baldwin Dropped out of George Washington U. after scandal Career: Acting
Julia Roberts Completed high school Career: Acting
Sean Penn Completed High school Career: Acting
Susan Sarandon Degree in Drama from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Career: Acting
Ed Asner Completed High school Career: Acting
George Clooney Dropped out of University of Kentucky Career: Acting
Michael Moore Dropped out first year University of Michigan. Career: Movie Director
Sarah Jessica Parker Completed High School Career: Acting
Jennifer Anniston Completed High School Career: Acting
Mike Farrell Completed High school Career: Acting
Janeane Garofalo Dropped out of College. Career: Stand up comedienne
Larry Hagman Attended Bard College for one year. Career: Acting
While comparing the education and experience of these two groups, we should also remember that President Bush and his cabinet are briefed daily, even hourly, on the War on Terror and threats to our security. They are privy to information gathered around the world concerning the Middle East, the threats to America, the intentions of terrorists and terrorist-supporting governments. They are in constant communication with the CIA, the FBI, Interpol, NATO, The United Nations, our own military, and that of our allies around the world. We cannot simply believe that we have full knowledge of the threats because we watch CNN!! We cannot believe that we are in any way as informed as our leaders.
These celebrities have no intelligence-gathering agents, no fact-finding groups, no insight into the minds of those who would destroy our country. They only have a deep-seated hatred for all things Republican. By nature, and no one knows quite why, the Hollywood elitists detest Conservative views and anything that supports or uplifts the United States of America. The silence was deafening from the Left when Bill Clinton bombed a pharmaceutical factory outside of Khartoum, or when he attacked the Bosnian Serbs in 1995 and 1999. He bombed Serbia itself to get Slobodan Milosevic out of Kosovo, and not a single peace rally was held. When our Rangers were ambushed in Somalia and 18 young American lives were lost, not a peep was heard from Hollywood. Yet now, after our nation has been attacked on its own soil, after 3,000 Americans were killed by freedom-hating terrorists while going about their routine lives, they want to hold rallies against the war. Why the change? Because an honest, God-fearing Republican sits in the White House.
Another irony is that in 1987, when Ronald Reagan was in office, the Hollywood group aligned themselves with disarmament groups like SANE, FREEZE and PEACE ACTION, urging our own government to disarm and freeze the manufacturing of any further nuclear weapons, in order to promote world peace. It is curious that now, even after we have heard all the evidence that Saddam Hussein has chemical, biological and is very close to obtaining nuclear weapons, their is no cry from this group for HIM to disarm. They believe we should leave him alone in his quest for these weapons of mass destruction, even though it is certain that these deadly weapons will eventually be used against us in our own cities.
So why the hype out of Hollywood? Could these celebrities believe that since they draw such astronomical salaries, they are entitled to also determine the course of our Nation? That they can make viable decisions concerning war and peace? Did Michael Moore have the backing of the Nation when he recently thanked France, on our behalf, for being a "good enough friend to tell us we were wrong"? I know for certain he was not speaking for me. Does Sean Penn fancy himself a diplomat, in going to Iraq when we are just weeks away from war? Does he believe that his high school diploma gives him the knowledge (and the right) to go to a country that is controlled by a maniacal dictator, and speak on behalf of the American people? Or is it the fact that he pulls in more money per year than the average American worker will see in a lifetime? Does his bank account give him clout?
The ultimate irony is that many of these celebrities have made a shambles of their own lives, with drug abuse, alcoholism, numerous marriages and divorces, scrapes with the law, publicized temper tantrums, etc. How dare they pretend to know what is best for an entire nation! What is even more bizarre is how many people in this country will listen and accept their views, simply because they liked them in a certain movie, or have fond memories of an old television sitcom!
It is time for us, as citizens of the United States, to educate ourselves about the world around us. If future generations are going to enjoy the freedoms that our forefathers bequeathed us, if they are ever to know peace in their own country and their world, to live without fear of terrorism striking in their own cities, we must assure that this nation remains strong. We must make certain that those who would destroy us are made aware of the severe consequences that will befall them.
Yes, it is a wonderful dream to sit down with dictators and terrorists and join hands, singing Cumbaya and talking of world peace. But it is not real. We did not stop Adolf Hitler from taking over the entire continent of Europe by simply talking to him. We sent our best and brightest, with the strength and determination that this Country is known for, and defeated the Nazi regime. President John F. Kennedy did not stop the Soviet ships from unloading their nuclear missiles in Cuba in 1962 with mere words. He stopped them with action, and threat of immediate war if the ships did not turn around. We did not end the Cold War with conferences. It ended with the strong belief of President Ronald Reagan... PEACE through STRENGTH.

Wow! You know how to copy and paste the same message over and over on multiple threads? I was never able to master that. It is beyond my mental capablilities. Wait a second. I'll get my third grade buddy to show me how. After that, I'll screw his tight little butthole.

As an American citizen Natalie has the right to say that she disagrees with the president. As an American citizen she IS qualified to speak on politics. Isn't that what is occuring all over this site? Personally, I think he IS a dolt. I didn't vote for him and the only reason I have to enjoy his time in office is that Republican presidents always give military raises.

I have undertaken alot of hard work in the progression of peace. I wish to add that the British Government is supported by 'powers that be', yes the same that our Queen was talking about in the Burrel case. It is this power that has influenced in this war. Britain is not a free and safe country. I wish to apply for asylum in another country. any offers? ps. not slitty-eyed countries please
