Update from the hunger strike site at Taco Bell headquarters in Irvine, CA, Tuesday 3/4/03:
The workers and student allies have entered Day 9 of the hunger strike and are feeling the effects of now a second week without eating. Here's the latest news --
A delegation of strikers met yesterday with Mayor Larry Agran of Irvine who, following the meeting, promised to call Taco Bell and urge the fast-food giant to meet with the workers in a constructive dialogue. Taco Bell responded today with a resounding "no," satisfied, apparently, that there are no human rights abuses in the Florida tomato industry.
Medical personnel who have cared for the strikers over the past 9 days today tried to speak to Taco Bell personnel about the increasingly serious condition of several of the strikers. Taco Bell refused to meet with the physician and registered nurse, and called security to usher them out of the building.
Tomorrow at 10:00 am there will be a very important Ash Wednesday ecumenical service in honor of the hunger strikers outside TB headquarters. All in the LA area are invited to join the workers for the service.
