Report on the _Great_ Pico Neighborhood Gathering For Peace today:
We had _12_ people!!!!! That's 10 more than we had last week!
Help us have even more next week; come back and invite your friends!
I had 200 copies of the demo flyer made, with my announcement of the demo onthe front and a "why oppose the war" page from the coalition on the
back. That made the flyer worth handing out to random passerby-by, and some of us together
got flyers into nearly all the hands that passed us by.
Here are some of the anecdotes I remember from the evening:
A probably homeless man, who spoke semi-broken english with great energy
and courage, said he really supported peace, and was glad I was out there as I was standing at the corner alone(around 4:50, before everyone else got there). He eventually took one of Cole Millers's NoMoreVictims.org posters (the ones with a
portrait of an Iraqi girl who's arm was blown off by a US bomb, and the question "Are you willing to kill her to get Saddam?") with him and showed it off along the
street. He came back a few minutes later with it attached to his chest and talked about it and his support for peace to some of us. It was great of him to do that, and very courageous.
One young women held a sign saying "PAZ" while she waited for the bus; She said she just wanted to help us as she was waiting.
We had our first walk-on person; Kurt said he saw us and decided to stop
and join us. I got his contact info(so you should be receiving this mailing,
Kurt. ;-))
We put the signs we were not using (not that there were very many by the time everyone got there :-) ) on the trees, light poles and other tall vertical things along
the street. None of them stayed in-visible or on the ground for long.
Jim Lafferty (host of KPFK's Lawyers Guild show, and an important peace activist) came to get a DVD from the video store behind us, and stopped
on his way out. He said we were doing very well, and I introduced him to various people. It was
wonderful to have one of the "leaders" of the movement bless our demo.
We had at least two people shout out of their windows, "See you tomorrow at Hollywood and Vine", one of whom got nearly half-way out of the car, and
startled some pedestirians who were crossing the street. I sort of half- shrugged at the pedestrians, saying, "well, sometimes we get pretty excited." and handed them flyers.
We got the usual, and wonderful, flurry and blare of many, many horns, from our "Honk for Peace" signs. It was a really good demo.
Please join us next Friday; if we get enough people, we can start spreading out to the other corners!
