Actions in Phoenix, Flagstaff, and Tucson drew over 4,000 people demonstrating for peace.
FEB 15: OVER 4000 IN ARIZONA SAY NO TO WAR | Feb 20 2003 |
Phoenix:
After a rally, the unpermitted march route, known to police, was spontaneously
altered by pagans and anarchists at the front of the group. Crowd estimates
range from 2,500 - 3,500. The crowd played cat and mouse with the police,
taking the streets for a total of three and a half hours. The march proved
nearly impossible
to control, as police attempts to direct were plowed through by anarchists
with linked arms. Several hundred continued to reclaim the streets, playing
music, dancing,
and chanting "No war on Iraq! Party in the streets!" Police
made six arrests, demonstrators were cited and released on misdemeanor
charges of obstructing traffic. In the course of a small
counter-demonstration,
one peace activist learned that fear
is a great motivating factor in the support for war. Flagstaff:
After a rally
with diverse speakers and music, up to 1,500 people reclaimed the streets.
The energetic march stretched
five city blocks. Tucson: "The Gas Station Protest" - about 100 demonstrators spent part of their Saturday educating the public about the connections between oil and the ongoing war in Iraq. Participants met at Himmel park, gathered into small groups, and dispersed to about 30 gas stations throughout the city. Read more From Global Resistance To Local Persistence |
