Sincero,
Marc Sidels

PLEASE CIRCULATE THIS REQUEST FOR INTERVIEWS

Ecosolidarity Andes and “Voces en Poder” ( A Magazine)
ecosolidarity@yahoo.com - 520-557-0807 (USA)

Dear social change organizations and young leaders (or almost young),

We seek like-minded people in South America who want to assist in organizing
and presenting workshops on economics, community organizing and multi-media during April, 2003.

Interviews are sought with economists, political scientists, organizers and representatives of community organizations.

We also hope to interview young, emerging leaders from popular movements. Articles will be published in major magazines so we can share the struggles and insights of these groups and their leaders with the world.

We are looking for the personal side of each social movement and their leaders - and their accomplishments too. Maybe they are simple local organizers or maybe they are the kind of people who will become the next Lula or Chavez - both are important, needed and news-worthy.

Video and audio materials will also be produced from the workshops and the
interviews.

Companeros, Vencinos y gente revolucionarias:

I am a writer, economist, a parent of two children, the Director of Ecosolidaridad and a longtime political organizer. I have always loved and cared for Latin America - at least since I went to Tijuana when I was 6 years old in 1963.

My efforts include:

Fighting the illegal US intervention in Nicaragua (1984-2003); Chairman for Nevada Jesse Jackson Campaign (1987-1988); Sister City Project, Santo Domingo, Nicaragua (1987-1991); Resistance at Warner Creek, Oregon (1996); Partido Verde, Arizona; Headwaters Forest/MAXXAM Campaign, California (1996-2003); The Luna Tree Sit, Stafford, California; Earth First! Journal, Eugene, Oregon; Anti- ACLA (FTAA), Tucson, Arizona; Ecosolidaridad Andes, Everywhere in the Americas, since 1998.

Interviews
I want to interview - on or off the record - community groups of all kinds in South America. I want to sell these stories to a variety of alternative and mass media. I want to tell your story as you would tell it and will work to get the right things published in the right places.

We are producing a series of articles and publications on popular movements and community groups in South America. These publications will be used in a newspaper like : Que Se Vayan Todos: Argentina’s Popular Uprising.” We have funding for some of this project and are looking for additional grants.

I always write the truth that I feel and I strive to write of others with the feelings that they express. I love input on the articles I work on and I have a proud history of presenting stories with integrity. I am a leftist, anti-imperialist and against US militarism. For many years I have been an agrarian utopian like the MST in Brazil and the Via Campesina. I believe that speaking out to the world and speaking directly to all companeros is the only way to a future with justice.

Please speak out to me and allow me the privilege of getting your voices heard.

I will be in Venezuela in March and can travel elsewhere in South America at that time. Ecosolidarity Andes correspondents are currently in South America and available to do interviews.

Muchas gracias tus ayuda y obreros
Marc Sidels

Interview Questions: - [Need Translated]

Think up your own questions that address the issues important to your group and send me the responses. In all of your responses be specific – timely – and looking ahead too. Don’t use too much rhetoric, please. Describe your group and what makes them special or powerful – their base, their origins and allies. Answer as many of the following questions as you feel comfortable with and that apply to you. Play it by ear to bring the human interest side out in the interviews.

1. What do you think about the projects and writings of Ecosolidarity Andes?
2. What do you and your group hope to accomplish in the next five years? Is your group planning anything big this year?
3. Why and how did you get started working in the group that you are now in?
4. Who are your mentors or role models?
5. When did you first think that you might be an activist or become politically active?
6. Where did you grow up, what was it like? Did anything in your upbringing, your family or your childhood influence your path in life or your beliefs?
7. How do you see the transition to a world free of US and multinational corporate domination?
8. What is the key to building a powerful movement for change?
9. What do you hope to see from the big changes taking place in South America?
10. Do you believe that reform of the system is still possible or is socialist revolution inevitable?
11. Do you see the US as the main force behind imperialism today?
12. Do you have any suggestions for US President Bush? For leftists in the US and Europe? For South American activists?
