NPR recently reported the lions in the zoo were emaciated and starving; the primates in not much better shape.

The caged animals in the zoo have no options during this war -- they cannot escape or find food on their own. These poor unfortunate sentient beings must not suffer the same cruel, inhumane tragic fate as the Sarajevo Zoo inhabitants.

There is no valid reason why these deserving animals must wait for necessary nutrition and veterinary medical care. It is not an either/or situation whereby humans must be cared for first, with the zoo and other equally deserving animals must continue to wait, wait, and wait until they all starve to death. No creature should endure such a fate, human or other species.

I have been concerned about the zoo animals since I heard about the starving lions earlier in the year. Why were they not evacuated by the U.S.? Why weren't citizens of Iraq offered evacuation with border controls?
Did any U.S. or other western alliance zoos offer to fly the animals out? Why not?

What can the public do to help this along? I would be open to any suggestions.

Bravo Dennis!! I couldn't have said it better. With so many people concerned you would think somebody would have something set up...donations, help etc. We just have to find out where. Actually I'm just now starting to see more about the zoo on the news. I'm also concerned about the animals that are in the environment. I saw a tank with a dog mascot on it.

If we want to restore peace and prosperity to Iraq, we must concern ourselves with all casualties of this war. These poor animals have no control over their fate, it is up to us the supposedly "superior" species to ensure their well being. Unfortunately in almost all of man's dealings with our fellow creatures it seems that they get the worst end of the deal. Let us seize this chance to care for these war victims.

I, also, am driven to aid the horribly suffering animals in the Badhdad Zoo. After some time searching the issue, I found what may the best charity to this affect: The American Zoo and Aquarium Association. They raised almost $500,000 to help the Kabul Zoo and are now starting a similar effort for the Baghdad Zoo. (As with the Kabul project, the North Carolina Zoological Society is coordinating the relief efforts.) Like the Kabul project, this effort will probably be in association with other Zoological Societies and Animal Welfare groups such as the World Society for the Protection of Animals (which has some kind of UN affiliation status .)

Donations can be sent to:

Save the whales, and all the animals for that matter....

by Brian Friday, Apr. 18, 2003 at 10:55 AM

I think the importance of the animals being taken care of at the Baghdad zoo is as important as the need to care for Iraqi children. Not to totally write off the older Iraqi population but let's face it, their is nothing on this planet more innocent than children and animals. Children are too young to be held accountable for their actions which are rarely that bad(infants and toddlers, not columbine), and, short of being rabid, animals do what they do by nature, never out of malice or hate. Adults however, are, shall we say, tainted? There is no real such thing as an innocent adult human being. So, If we have issues deciding how to prioritize our helping hand efforts, I propose that we start with children and animals in that order, and then work our way to the older population. In addition, I'd like to agree with a point that was made before that applies to children as well as animals in a zoo that they are defenseless. Animals kept in a zoo rely solely on human beings. If I were in charge(and Im sure many of you sleep very soundly at night knowing that Im not)one of the first things I would do would be to save the animals. They do not deserve to feel any shred of the pain of war.

Mrs.

by Dee DeTevis Friday, Apr. 18, 2003 at 9:33 PM

I was horrified by seeing my first pictures of the Baghdad Zoo today......and I've been glued to all the cable stations for weeks now. I don't know how I missed them before this. What I started doing earlier today was contacting all zoo's and animal protection agencies worldwide by e-mail that I can find on the internet and asking why there isn't some sort of safety net in place to protect these animals before they get into the distress they are in. I feel it's very very bad publicity and public relations for anyone to witness what happens on a bad day at the zoo. They profess to be the caretakers of the world's animals.......I'd like to see them put their money or positions where their mouths are. If they can't insure these animals won't be in such horrible situations....then they should never endorse them ever being caged. If nothing else, these animals should had been euthanized so that they wouldn't had suffered. But to simply walk away and allow them to die slowly from lack of water and food is unexcusable, to say the least. This doesn't seem like such a large zoo that a few helping dollars from the many mega zoo's around the world couldn't help in some way. Possibly the animals could be transported to another zoo near to where they are now. I'm not that familiar with them yet, but I'm going to try and find out. It seems the animal experts just aren't as interested in saving them or relieving them of their pain as we are. Does anyone know if any of the zoo's or animal protection agencies has even gotten involved in this?

You said "just read on the news" Well, which news are you referring too? Some other tainted news source that goes out of its way to report lies?? They probably aren't doing anything for the animals at all. By the way news gets slandered on this website, I'll be in the next fifteen minutes it will go from "they are being fed" to, "they are being raped, beaten and oppressed by the Marines, the news you're watching is lying!!".

Please pardon the butting in but...

When have animals started a war endangering humans?
When have they put humans in a zoo so people can stare at them?
Animals are amazing creatures. They are a gift from God and we are privileged to share this planed with them. We don't own it anymore than they do.

Us humans, we have destroyed this planet. We are killing every resource. We have bastardized nature and why? For a few comforts and money. We owe animals all over the word bigtime.

Plus last I checked there are around 11,000 different kinds of animals and plants endangered. How many humans are in the same situation?

by daveman Sunday, Apr. 20, 2003 at 1:51 AM

Saw it on Fox News. Couldn't find any links. Just the embedded reporter's remarks broadcast. At the risk of beling labeled, I believe the guy.

Cry "Shill!" and let slip the dogs of the left!

FMD: Genesis 1:26
"And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth."

Animals are indeed a gift from God. And, like all gifts, they deserve our consideration and care.

That being said, I eat meat. I wear leather. I eat and drink dairy. I use all sorts of animal products. I'm pretty sure that's what God intended when He gave us dominion over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

I don't approve of fur. I don't approve of people owning animals and not taking proper care of or interacting with them. I'm sure you know someone with a dog tied up in the back yard, never played with, never loved. Pets hould be spayed and neutered. Does Fluffy need a $5,000 liver operation? Even if I could afford it, Fluffy's probably out of luck. But people with other Fluffies will gladly shell out.

You asked how many humans are endangered. Up unitl a month ago, the Iraqis were. There are peoples in Africa facing genocide.

Sorry if this sounds kind of disjointed. It's been a long week.

by Todd Sunday, Apr. 20, 2003 at 3:42 AM

No, the animals are in cages and are essentially prisoners of humanity. It is absolutely our responsibility to place the care of these animals at the top of our priority list. Because they, unlike people, ABSOLUTELY CANNOT care for themselves.

Sure while having a hamburger doesn't make one a soldier of evil... (even though poor ol' Bessie never hurt a fly)because you're not messing up the food chain. If you kill predators you are seriously messing with nature.
Please don't quote the bible. It is a little annoying when people do that. LIke it's the book of absolute truth. It's an interpretation of stories that has been translated and re-interpretated. But that's another argument.
Back to the animals, you argued that the people in Irak were endangered and the people in some African countries are endangered. Well it's people that have made the mess not animals. People are the only creatures that never have enough of anything and who are compelled to destroy anything in their way. Animals just kill to eat. They are at our mercy.

No I don't know anyone who has a dog tied up in the back yard. If I did I would have that dog rescued. I don't associate with people that don't like animals. As far as I'm concerned the way a person is to animals speaks volumes of their characther.

I received quite a few messages addressing my question to various zoos as to help being planned for the animals in the Baghdad Zoo. The majority directed that contributions be sent to:

Aid to Baghdad Zoo
c/o North Carolina Zoological Society
4403 Zoo Parkway
Asheboro, NC 27205

I don't want to get into the issues of God or designer leather. But to those who feel deeply for all life on our earth and the wonder of all the universe and want to do something to help to stop some of the suffering that is going on in some way, then I applaud them. And to those who bask in the ability to horrify, threaten and torture......well, I think we've just seen the U.S. and Great Britain take a stand against that type of idealism. I hope there will be some relief to the people of Iraq and also, for the suffering animals that need help, too.

Good morning, gang - again!

Davemen: You're up to the challenge
L.R. This site is about the animals - two and four legged ones! Last I heard, Kuwait had sent in truckloads of food for the animals and I spent many hours last week contacting people like National Geographic, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and several smaller national organizations. They must've heard me - and others 'cuz I got word back that several other veterinarian groups are waiting for the 'go ahead' to get food and medical attention in.

Susan: Thnx for the website, lady. I really appreciate it!

Hey you guys, we've built such a nice site, we ought to find somewhere in a chat room we can keep up the clowning. I wouldn't want DAVEMEN to not have a more proper stage to sing songs of Santa and the Tooth Fairy!

I talked to the director over the North Carolina Zoo. He said as of Saturday, the animals finally got food. It was suppossed to be taken to the animals on Friday, but there was a delay until Saturday. He told me that if the news stopped reporting on the story , then something good must be happening. He said there are about 15 lions and tigers left. Sad news is that in the past week, three got out and they were shot. He said they were a risk to the public. I told him that was a pretty bad way to end their lives after they have already been starved to death. There are a group of veterinarians waiting in Jordan to be able to enter Iraq. I bet someone let the lions out. They have been there this long, why now would they get out to roam the streets. I told him people wanted updates on this story. He said to go to www.nczoo.com for any new developments. This information he told me is not posted on that site. Oh, the 15 tigers, lions also include the ones at Uday's home. He also has a collection that are being fed. I also told him that they should be taken out of that zoo to another country. Thats the last thing those people need right now. They might try to eat them, or be eaten. He said it was being talked about. I feel sorry for the 3 that were shot. He said the soilders had no way to contain them. If they had gotton the vets over there sooner, then they could of sedated the ones that got out. That is all I know. This man I talked to is the one of the people in charge of getting help to the animals. I figure his info is the truth. I may call him back and tell him, that it would be nice to see pictures of the animals eating and being cared for on their site. That along with this information might make all those who care feel a little bit relieved. C-YA...

Susan & Daveman

by Kathleen Saturday, Apr. 26, 2003 at 4:13 PM

Susan: Sorry, been causing H & D on other websites. I been reading the other stuff from indymedia and its a crack-up. Thnx for the update on the critters. I found an article about the blind lion Saddam had - it finally died. He was apparently pretty weakened by the starving thing and its probably better that way anyhow. I have also heard that IFAW is waiting in Kuwait and also about the vets in Jordan and SYRIA (believe it or not). That country makes me crazy. I think they're really making an art of burning the candle at both ends and trying not to get burned, ya know?

You need to check out the indymedia.org outfit. Daveman and a couple other loonies, ie: terrist and sheepdog run about up there. Its been fun reading their stuff. Drop in and check it out.

DAVEMAN: Nope, been married 24years this April Fools' Day. I gotta say, you're really funny, tho. I get such a kick out of your cynacism (spelling?).

I'm off to the "zoo". Hope to catch ya both up there,

LOL,
Kat

What in the world is going on here? I leave you guys alone for a couple days, and the roof falls in!!! What's this about Muslims? Hey, maybe we should all start disliking people with brown hair and brown eyes, while we're at it, eh?

C'mon folks, don't we have enough of this garbage going on with hairballs like Hussein and old flat face there in North Korea?

We're supposed to set the standard aren't we?

Daveman, help me out here

As a concerned animal lover I am very stressed about these victims left to fend for themselves or at the worst have to suffer unneedlessly at the mercy of humans. I am hoping there is someway we can help give the animals the care they need .please pass on to the world they need our help.
