National Meeting of Local Unions Opposing the War on Iraq

Bob Muehlenkamp -former Executive. VP, Local 1199 , currently organizing campaigns with various unions & Paul Waterhouse, Adm. Asst to the Secretary Treasurer,Teamster Local 705,Chicago

At a national meeting on Jan 11th in Chicago, over 125 local labor union officials, staff and activists from across America discussed plans to express their growing opposition of union locals to the Bush administration's push for war in Iraq. The meeting is being hosted by Teamster Local 705 – the second largest Teamster Local in the nation. The gathering is unprecedented within the labor movement in at least two ways: it is occurring as a response to spontaneous, independent expressions of anti-war sentiment rarely associated with American unions, and it is taking place before armed conflict has begun.

And then we go live to a meeting of NYC Public Sector Unions Against the War at DC 37 Headquarters in Lower Manhattan with numerous local union leaders from DC 37, and from DC 1707 and CWA, Local 1180. This meeting ties together anti-war activism with a plea to use the resources consumed by war and the tax cuts to rebuild our Cities and Nation.Sponsored by New York Public Library Guild Local 1930. Local 1930 member Chris Karatnytsky will be reporting.
