Dear Los Angeles friends,

A coalition of antiwar groups in Los Angeles is gathering signatures for a petition we will present to the Los Angeles City Council. We will ask the City Council to issue a resolution stating that the City of Los Angeles is opposed to military action against Iraq.

At the following site, you can see a list of the cities and universities that have issued resolutions or are in the process of doing so:

http://citiesforpeace.org/

If you support this petition, please eneter your name, address, zip code, and council district (if you know it) below.

Any residents of Los Angeles can sign this petition. You do not need to be a registered voter. The only requirement is that you be living, human, and that you reside within the limits of the City of Los Angeles. (This means that children can sign, too.)

Once you complete your information, please mail the petition in HTML format to other Los Angeles (only) residents who you believe to also oppose a war against Iraq.

When the petition is full of signatures, I ask that the final signer send it to me at the following email address:

evelynsq@pacbell.net

If you do not know anyone to whom you can send the petition and it contains signatures, please mail it to me at the above email address.

If you have any questions, please contact me at the above email address.

Thank you!

Proposed RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF LOS ANGELES OPPOSING UNITED STATES MILITARY ACTION AGAINST IRAQ

WHEREAS, the government has estimated that a war would cost 200 billion dollars, resulting in less federal funding for education, health care, job training, and housing in a time of increasing need for residents of Los Angeles; and

WHEREAS, a war would result in the death of Iraqi civilians, as well as military casualties, including U.S. service men and women. Additionally, a war would result in widespread environmental destruction; and

WHEREAS, a preemptive attack by the U.S. not only sets a dangerous precedent for the international community, but also promises to destabilize the entire Middle East region; and

WHEREAS, the Bush administration has failed to present credible evidence that Iraq poses a military or security threat to the United States.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City Council of the City of Los Angeles: supports all international diplomatic efforts to resolve the current conflict with Iraq and opposes any military action against Iraq unless as a response to a direct military attack by that country.

We, the undersigned, are petitioning the City Council of Los Angeles to adopt this resolution against a war with Iraq:
